re: I’m case you’ve ever wondered what a TOW missile can do to a T-72 MBT

Imagine a world where these missiles are antique tech and have trickled down to random 3rd world country militias and terrorist groups.

They were (as mentioned up thread) very common in Syria.

Most places range fires account for the majority of range downtime. At Hood cattle around the targetry always was our #1 downtime risk. Especially when we were shooting rockets no godly idea where they were going most of the time so they had to be nowhere around.

The cow obliteration happened during a night live fire. I was an evaluator and a national guard unit was doing their tank tables. This gunner though he had a moving tank target but what he really had in his GPS was a freak cow that had wandered onto the range. To his credit he hit it dead center mass. As soon as he fired the round range control declared a cease fire because they knew immediately he was engaging something nowhere near any moving target.
We went down range to see what he’d hit. That’s when we found what had up until moment before been a rather large cow. It didn’t do as much damage as you’d think though. He hit it with a 120 mm SABOT training round that put a hole clear though the cow’s midsection about the size of your arm. A good deal of the cow’s innards were hanging out of and splattered around the exit would.
Another time at a tank range here in Alabama (Pelham Range) they had to call a cease fire because a dumbass hunter drove his truck onto a dirt road that crosses the middle the range. The idiot had got lost and when he came to the barricade warning him of a hot range and to turn around he instead moved the barricade and drove his arse right onto a live tank range. There was a tank on the firing line awaiting their first targets to pop up. Luckily for him range control saw this moving target down range where no targets were supposed to be up. He was seconds from meeting his maker. I think the MPs got him instead.

That was rude, uncalled for and beyond the pale.

I thought it was a work of art. There's not many things in this world more beautiful than American ordnance sending a T-72 turret spinning though the air in a massive fireball.

Tanks weren't a safe place to be in 1944 European theater.
