There were a lot of real life examples coming out of Syria between 2012-2017 or so. The rebel groups that were given TOWs knocked out hundreds of those tanks. Youtube had a lot of the videos but I think they were mostly taken down. Really brutal stuff.

Back in the mid-80s(?), when TOW missiles were getting popular, I had a friend who was some kind of unit leader for them. At the time, they were fired from Humvees. He quickly figured out that if push came to shove in the Fulda Gap, he estimated he had a very short life expectancy. He switched his MOS to aviation, first chance he got.
IIRC, the acronym TOW stood for something like Tube fired, Optically sighted, Wire guided. He said you would have to stay in your firing position and guide the missile for whatever it's flight time was ... And then a Hind would return the favor.
Have TOWs always been designed to blow up above the target? Maybe that was classified back then, but I always thought they were direct hit type penetration weapons.

Have to imagine modern armor will soon be obsolete in the face of multi launch smart missiles and drone swarm type attacks unless defensive technology changes dramatically.
Same goes for aircraft carriers honestly.
I guess with a combined arms approach with anti air and anti missile defense systems it might be possible to defend these platforms from a modern battlefield?

I was a tanker, ironically in Germany near your friend at that same time. We didn’t use TOW missiles. They were mounted on our Cav Scout’s Bradley’s though.
(This is a newer Bradley but the TOW launcher is the same as they were back in my day)

I’ve never seen a bird buy it on a range. But I did see a cow that took a 120 mm Sabot round on a tank range in Ft. Hood, Texas. It wasn’t pretty.

This has been discussed and debated since the end of WWII. Neither tanks or air craft carriers will be retired anytime soon.

Yes. Armor by itself is vulnerable. Infantry by itself is vulnerable. This is why combined arms warfare has been the standard since WWII.

The human civilization has advanced to its current stage primarily because of war technology. Can civilization, even sentience, evolve without it? I don’t think so.
Therefore, we can fully expect alien civilizations to have evolved in the same manner. While most of humanity has also incorporated diplomacy to avoid most large scale conflicts, there are factions that would immediately annihilate all others if they possessed the means. Witness fundamental Islam and some other religions.
Our first contact with aliens might be our last, or their last depending upon which philosophy is dominant for either side.

The BGM-71 was a “direct hit” type of weapon. It used a shaped copper charge and could penetrate 17” of steel at a 30 degree angle.

The key is that being that the missile is wire guided, the launch platform has to remain static until it impacts its target. During that time, it is very vulnerable.

I got to shoot the ground/shoulder mounted TOW at Fort Benning. Didn’t think it was going to be that loud to launch.... I was 100% blown away... no pun! That’s a amazing missile system! Old technology and will still obliterate the enemy!

That's a new version of the TOW that uses an EFP to defeat the armor from above. It is not the concussion destroying that tank. Older versions impacted the tank using a shaped charge to defeat the armor.
