It ain’t pretty. The good news for the T-72 crew is they’d never know what hit them. One second you’re there, the next you’re obliterated.

So it destroyed that tank with concussion.
I always though they used shaped charges to pierce the armor.

How did they come up with the science to have a downward penetration charge on something moving that fast?
Just amazing and would not like to be in that tank.

Other anti-armor ordnance does that. But the TOW detonates directly over the tank as this is where a tank’s armor is the most vulnerable.

The ww2 Gammon grenade was a sticky plastic explosive that would blow up on the outside and cause a chip of armor to break off and fly around inside. Neat idea except it required someone to run up to the tank and stick it on. This proved difficult in practice.

T-72s. That's a name I haven't heard un a while.
And any good tanker knows that a TOW requires a prudent Sagger Drill.

That’s called “spalling”. This was also how the “HESH” (high explosive squash head) round worked. Here is a video of how it worked compared to a HEAT (high explosive anti-tank).

During my time we used HEAT on thinner-skinned vehicles like BMPs. For tanks, the go-to was the APFSDS (armor piercing fin stabilized discarding sabot) round.
