Only 18% of all "blind people" are 100% blind. There are a lot of different tools other than braille that can be used for reading

Have you had a low vision eval? I assume UAB Optometry school has a good low vision clinic, most optometry schools do

Andrew Huberman had a scientist from Stanford on a couple weeks ago.
He’s head of research and he talked about the stuff they’re working on
He said they should be able to cure most eye conditions in the next five years and be able to give sight to a lot of people

I am legally blind as well, I have a genetic condition called Retinitis Pigmentosa. I have very little peripheral vision and next to nothing vision in low lighting. I still have ok central vision, but it’s tunnel vision.
I am very dependent on my wife for help. We went to Chicago last week and I needed her to help me navigate around crowds of people and climbing/descending steps to the elevated train platforms.
I am going to the VA’s Blind Rehab program next year. I need to use my white cane more, but I’m stubborn and prideful.
Have you looked into blindness rehab programs or other resources? There’s quite a bit of resources available to us.
I am very dependent on my wife for help. We went to Chicago last week and I needed her to help me navigate around crowds of people and climbing/descending steps to the elevated train platforms.

I’m 54. I was diagnosed three years ago. I’m still working and have some hobbies I can participate in. So I have a pretty good quality of life.
As it’s genetic, I’ve had it all my life but never noticed the decline until I was around 50.

I'm sorry to heat about this. Growing up, we had a very good family friend who went blind in their mid-40's, but she adjusted well and had a supportive family. All I can suggest is finding a support group not only for yourself, but for you wife as well, and don't let the blindness curb your social interaction. Still go out and meet people and be yourself as much as possible. I hope all goes well as they possibly can for you.
