I gave my 12 year $2 for doing some chores so he could buy candy at school. He came home with $8. He bought the candy and resold it at recess to other kids for a profit. He used that money to buy more candy and kept on until he had $8. He even gave me my $2 back.
I carry a lot of regret for parenting mistakes I've made so it's extra rewarding when I see them succeeding.

Buddy across the street's older daughter lined up some dog walking gigs around the neighborhood paying $5 per walk.
Older kid got the middle child to do it and paid her $2.
Middle child was furious when she found out the job paid $5.

I just knew this was going to be a life lesson for a 12yo in sharing and selflessness, turning $2 into feeding 10 friends and helping the cafeteria lady with home repair or some such.
