100% this.
I suck at it and love it. I've skied 5 times and I love it. It is expensive if you buy all that shite. But if you live in a state then I'm not sure why you wouldn't skied or snowboard. I am an out of control skier and some of those hills are scary AF and feel like I'm gonna die or kill some other skier. So I stick to the smallest most intermediate runs where I feel safe. My dumbass went down one that was for good skiers and regretted it the whole way down. Scary

I will second that motion. If god meant folks to tie themselves to sticks and fling themselves down icy covered hills he'd have made it abundantly clear that was his intent....instead he made doing so kill folks pretty regularly which is about as over the top as God gets with messaging....

First off the areas where you have to go to got skiing suck for the most part. Its pretty for about 30 minutes then we get it....its white shite on trees. After that is just damned cold and most likely crowded.....like a refrigerated Carnival Cruise. Then there is the entire skiing thing. Yes. Sliding down ice is fun. for about 30 seconds, unless you are 3 years old and have no sense of time or decorum. The only good thing about skiing is drinking in the ski lodge but a marina bar in the tropics is exactly the same idea except it ain't cold....and therefore infinitely better....

pro tip, go to Canada or Europe. It's actually cheaper than going out west. You'll spend more on your flight to Europe obviously but save money on everything else, and it's a cooler trip in general

This. I’ve been to Colorado once to ski, but have been to Austria several times. You can snag a relatively inexpensive flight to Munich and catch the train down to Innsbruck. Stay in Innsbruck and there are Ski Buses that stop at all of the major hotels and take you to the various resorts around Innsbruck. The Stubai valley runs south from Innsbruck to the border of Italy, so you get to ski the Austrian-Italian Alps which is amazing. The ski passes are a fraction of what you would pay in Colorado, equipment rentals are roughly the same, hotels are cheaper, and the crowds aren’t near as bad. Oh yeah, and awesome food too! Highly recommend.

You are clearly doing it wrong.

Scruffy loves to ski.

Mountain air is great.

We go yearly to Park City. Going this February.

Snow boarding isn’t rough on the knees like skiing is, but you might break your tail bone.

people to show their perceived wealth by bragging to their friends that they went to Breck or Vail during Mardi Gras

If it doesn't get posted to the 'gram, it never really happened. Back in the day I guess we just got, "We're going skiing over spring break." "Ok, have a good time!" Now, it's women just out-dueling each other on social media, repeatedly during the day, reposting pictures weeks later, and all that other shite.

It's not jealousy, it's just STFU already. You're (Insta people) worse than an old dude showing slides of the family trip to Wally World in the 80s, because at least those pictures were "real."

I’m not an athlete by any measure, but I’m not some sedentary blob either. Skiing was the one physical activity that I couldn’t do. I tried for two days on the bunny slopes at Alta and I just couldn’t get it. Even had an instructor day two. I could tell the MFer thought I was retarded by the end of the day. I just couldn’t do it. Most frustrating thing I’ve ever tried to do.

Same story. I was a complete failure and will likely never try again. My entire body hurt for days after.

100% a status symbol for many. So crowded now in many places.

It is fun. But not worth the money and time, imo.

From your OP you do not seem like the athletic type. Skiing is for people that have other hobby pursuits that require a little athleticism. If you grew up playing high school sports, skate boarded with friends in the neighborhood, road BMX and motocross growing up, water skied on the rivers, sailed and wind surfed on the lakes you are going to probably like skiing and/or snowboarding. Otherwise its going to be trudging experience as you described.

I happen to love skiing and snowboarding. But, different strokes for different folks.

My guess is that you do not have an athletic or competitive bone in your body. Do I expect my grandmother to LOVE motocross? Hell no. It's the same with you and skiing. My first time skiing, I took lessons everyday and progressed from bunny slope to blue-black in a week. I loved every second of it.

Yeah but do you really want to be known as a snowboarder?

There’s a reason the better resorts don’t let that sort in.

Tough to please when 1/2 want fewer crowds, 1/2 want cheaper tickets.

If you’re ok with smaller mountains and slower lifts you can still find both with minimal research. Lots of cheaper places to teach the kids how to ski.

If you want express lifts, fancy ski town, and a lot of terrain, it’s gonna be expensive. Why would it not be?

This sounds more like a you problem by perceiving that your friends are bragging or flaunting their wealth because they took a fun trip that you are jealous of and talked about it.

This is a big issue anymore with people, disliking their friends' success by being jealous, envious or bitter about having fun doing things they can't do instead of just being happy for them and glad they had a great time, just like with money in general.

this is one of the biggest things. If you take any trip and post any on social media, people immediately take it as bragging, especially here in South LA where most people are poor.

And many here cant fathom having the money to take multiple vacations a year.

We catch hell for sending our kids to private school. people assume we think we are too good to send our kids to school with their kids, is insane. Hell my own family can be like that at times.

The jealousy in south LA where any post is perceived as bragging or flaunting wealth has gotten ridiculous, how dare someone share memories of a great trip. Hell there are people in this thread bitching about people sharing stuff on instagram.

as far as skiing goes, I havent been but will go soon. But it can be done for cheaper if you dont do CO or Utah. I do know its not something fat out of shape people like for sure.

I will say this and the thread is perfect example.....many people in LA perceive any activity that doesnt involve sitting around getting hammered drunk all day as shitty. People in this thread saying the only thing good about skiing is the drinking, op bitching about hangovers being worse etc etc

You are a grown arse adult, there is no need to drink like a damn teenager unless your life just sucks that bad that you need to forget for a while. Have 1 or 2 drinks and call it a day, everything doesnt have to be a drunkfest frat party.
