re: I'll be the one to say it: Skiing may be the most overrated thing on earth

I have been many times and enjoy it, but I haven't been in years due to a lot of the factors you referenced. It has evolved into another way for people to show their perceived wealth by bragging to their friends that they went to Breck or Vail during Mardi Gras.
This sounds more like a you problem by perceiving that your friends are bragging or flaunting their wealth because they took a fun trip that you are jealous of and talked about it.
This is a big issue anymore with people, disliking their friends' success by being jealous, envious or bitter about having fun doing things they can't do instead of just being happy for them and glad they had a great time, just like with money in general.

If you don’t like skiing and cold weather, then why would you vacation in a place that has both…and then bitch about to all of us, because you didn’t do/buy the right things that could’ve made it more enjoyable?
Oh, say no more…

Great thing to do if you want to be injured horribly
Underrated thing about skiing. Strapping a giant ski to your foot then going 50 MPH is a great way to shred all of your cruciate ligaments if anything twists even slightly. Very dangerous sport

I suck at golf. I couldn’t imagine making a vacation out of this activity.
Uh 95% of golfers in this world suck. That activity is pretty popular and profitable for the golf world.

if you are scared of hurting your knees you snowboard so you hurt your upper body instead

definitely a status symbol thing for a lot of people in flyover country

I can see how this conclusion can be drawn but I am not jealous of other people's vacations. I do very well and can go anywhere in the world I want to go, and have taken my family skiing a few times. I like the actual activity, but no longer care for the crowds and hassle it is to put your skis in powder from my home in LA.

I went when I was in college and I couldn't wait to learn. After the initial training session and first strip down a basic slope, it was all very "meh". I was there for four days and as each day passed, I hated it more and more. Three layers of clothes, 20 pounds of shite to lug around, and even doing something basic like stopping at the lodge to eat was a pain because you had to find a spot for the 20 pounds of shite you lugged around all day.
The capper was the last day there I was skiing on a mid-tier slope and my left ski came unhooked because the idiot at the shop that morning didn't rig my stuff correctly. Halfway down I crashed and rolled a good 400 yards. I shite you not. I didn't get hurt, but I left about two layers of clothes behind me with both skis, poles, etc. The lifeguard there told me I had a "garage sale". My parents ended up getting a refund for a few days of ski rentals for that frick up.
This was 30 years ago. I have no desire to do that shite ever again. I'll hike a mountain, but I won't ski down one.

No. Unless you're on a double black, there's not chance this happened.

There is a lot of bullshite in this thread.

…1,500 miles away…. I hate 0 degree temp. I hate the altitude. Ears constantly popping and unpopping. I don't like the lines. I don't like how much effort it takes to make one step in 2 feet deep snow. It's like 40 regular steps. Hangovers seem to be worse in the mountains. It's repetitive
I don’t do any of these things. Live part of time 15-20 mins from lift. Peak is under 9000 ft (NW Montana). Don’t ski when it’s that cold. I don’t step in deep unpacked snow without skis/skins. Don’t drink. I don’t wait in lift lines unless fast/short one on powered day or weekend (ski weekdays usually). And I ski mostly in the trees and side/backcountry keep it interesting. Not rich.
I will say that ski vacations wouldn’t really be something I did much for many of the reasons you state. And it takes me a couple days to acclimate to anything much over 10k’. And trying to learn skiing only seldom and not growing up with def can be miserable.
And please take video of you pizzaing out of control for us!!
In short I agree with you but I love my personal ski experience which is pretty much the only way I’d do it or else quit.

Lucky to have a place in MT near my favorite place in the country to ski in Whitefish. Never have to wait in lines because the mountain is gigantic and ski resort tucked away in the NW corner of MT.
(just one side of the mountain)
Me and my bro can go over an hour without seeing anyone else skiing certain trails.
Already own all my own ski equipment now so no more rental costs, don’t have to pay outrageous prices to stay at a ski resort since the mountain is a short drive away and it’s absolutely beautiful on a crisp day. Altitude isn’t nearly as bad as it is in other resort areas either with the summit only at 6,800 ft
Frankly none of the qualms you have about skiing are issues for us there. Don’t ever have to mingle with hotty toddy people either. Maybe it’s because you associate skiing with the Uber rich places like in Colorado. In Montana that would be the big sky resort in Bozeman.

I'm so southern I thought this thread would be about water skiing.
For the record I don't even water ski anymore. If I did I'd feel like I had been in a car crash

All I know is that I got off the lift, started the slope, and as soon as I started building up speed and as soon as I started to go straight down, it came off. I proceeded to roll down the rest of the way. The lifeguard that went upslope to get my shite told me I rolled "several football fields". I honestly don't remember what type of color or diamond or whatever the frick the slope was. By day 4 I was doing harder and harder ones. I just know I was pissed off, lost my favorite watch, and I didn't want to go back. After the guard got me my stuff and I returned it, I went back to the cabin for the rest of the day, never to return to another ski town. Don't believe me? I don't care.

Sounds like a floating wal mart cruise is more your speed.

Never been skiing so I can’t talk on that specifically. But what I do know is… different people like different shite. Who cares?

I cannot even ski due to neck surgeries but love our family ski trips.
My kids all took to it quickly and love it.
My guilty pleasure is taking the Eagle Bahn gondola up to the ski school and grabbing some beers while watching the 40 year olds trying to navigate a single step.
It certainly is not for everybody. It can be expensive depending on the time and the resort but it does not have to be. But at the end of everyday on the slopes I watch happy and exhausted faces as I sip my bourbon by a roaring fire.

going up a mountain only to slide back down and do it again?
makes total sense.
