re: I'll be the one to say it: Skiing may be the most overrated thing on earth

First real green slope after learning on the bunny hills all morning. Barreled straight down it like a runaway rocket and nearly bulldozed a mom and her 5-year-old.
Tried the wedge thing and it did nothing.
Panicked and did sort of an NFL QB slide before I hit someone. Because of that, I accidentally learned how to shift my weight and turn for real.
I realized really quickly on my first trip that my main goal was to get out of there without having to have another back surgery.
Trip #2 the goal was still pretty much perfecting the crash so I limited damage. Had numerous crashed in front of people that would have went viral had they been recorded.
Thrip #3 was where I actually gave some thought to actually trying to be a decent at skiing itself.

for five fir four days skiing? Impossible. Retail is 1000 bucks each and 700 for kids.
$345 each for me and the wife for 3 days
$179 each for the 2 older kids for 3 days
Third child under 3 is free

OP did you ever get a lesson? My friends who are good skiers tried to teach me the first time I tried but I just couldn't get it.
The second time I paid for a fairly brief lesson, and it clicked. I probably looked ridiculous sputtering slowly down the slope, but I felt some semblance of control and it was a ton more enjoyable.
But yeah all the other stuff you mentioned, I agree. The crowds, the uncomfortable gear, the cost, the cold, the risk of getting injured-all of that is why I don't really make too much of an effort to go skiing.
but my friends who are into it absolutely LOVE it. Its one of their favorite things in the world. And I totally get it.

This knocks out a lot of people because they don’t wanna look stupid. Which most people will those first few times

If I sucked at skiing which it sounds like you do, then I wouldn’t like it at all either. But I’m fairly good at it and it’s awesome. If you’re trying to stop by doing the pizza move, then that’s all we need to know. That’s for kids on first day or two of learning to ski.

If you're good at skiing there is an adrenaline rush when doing challenging runs. It's also nice being outside all day in beautiful terrain.

You're doing it wrong
If you don’t learn the correct way it does suck. When you learn they teach you the snow plow method to stop. Once you learn how to actually ski the correct way it’s a blast

If you aren't doing it with regularity then it's more of a chore and not all that fun. Once you become a proficient skier it is some of the most fun you can have. When I lived 30 minutes from the slopes and had season passes I was skiing on average 3 to 5 days a week. Rolling off the lift, putting on your song for the run then just ripping it down the mountain is some goof stuff. When you are immersed it makes all the difference and becomes a community event.

My first ski instructor told me he doesn't teach the pizza wedge or whatever it's called. He said "it's for pussies". I laughed my arse off, but he also scared me a little.

Skiing is for the rich, the elite, the smartest people in society, and the attractive. If you don’t like it then you don’t fall into any of those categories.

I have tried it. I wasn't very good at it. After a few trips down the baby slope, I was ready to hang out in the lodge with a hot drink. Given a choice, I would prefer to go fishing.

I switch to boarding a few years ago and love it. Going to steamboat in a few weeks. My wife switched with me but broke her arm and went back to skis.

Hell, I don't even like water skiing. I've done both types and a commonality is 'lots of effort for little reward.'
I know some people love skiing, I just don't personally care for it.

you're definitely doing it wrong. I don't enjoy things I'm not good at either. Skiing is very fun if you know how to ski. I don't see it being very fun if you don't. Also don't see it being very fun if you don't like cold weather.
And no, I don't form my whole identify around skiing. I used to go once a year, although it's been a few years due to COVID and us adding two children to the family, but started skiing as a teenager. It's a good time
This
No status at all
Just love the isolation, beauty, fun to glide down a mountain
OP probably isn't big on the outdoors and that's ok
No need to denigrate what others find fun

Skiing is great but it's too expensive
I’ve never been skiing.
So on average how much would say … a Friday-Sunday ski trip cost for one person?
