Shreveport is as well known as Baton Rouge and at one time as well know as New Orleans. If you doubt me it's because you don't know the history of KWKH.

Also at one time the Bossier Strip was better known than Las Vegas.

I joined the military and was in two branches and did basic twice in states far from here. In both cases I had Drill Sargents/Petty Officers from the NO metro. They both knew about my Lil town DTR and seemed to be waiting for me to arrive. One was from the ninth ward and other from Marrero

Theses were completely random people who knew where Port Sulphur, LA was.

Pretty much every town in LA has had a sports star or two, and not to mention the hurricanes

Hell all the big towns have their own D1 college teams

At least 2% of the country knows where Chalmette is

I'd be surprised if houma, alex., ruston, or monroe ever made anyone's list.

Are children in elementary school (like 5th or 6th grade geography) still taught the capitals of every state in the Union?

Houma: 20%

you’d be shocked how many people in random arse places in America know about Houma.

i’m from the bayous south of Houma.
when telling people where i’m from, i usually say “South of New Orleans”.
And i’m still surprised how often i get a response like “around Houma?”.

vast majority of people obviously have no clue it even exists.
but more people than i expected do know it’s there.

ETA: the percent is way ther hell lower than 20 nationwide. Just higher than what i would have guessed growing up.

I think you are vastly overestimating the geographic knowledge of the average American.
