would you consider going to a 2-year community college first?

Can't athletes go to junior college now and now not lose any NCAA eligibility? I would think football rosters are about to swell in the juco ranks.

If it were me I would be happy with a 2 year associate degree at a local juco and living with my parents as long as I could tolerate the rules. Until I had my 12 month emergency fund and my credit above 800. I’d try to buy my own place at 22.
If I wanted to finish a bachelor’s and beyond, I’d be trying to find employers that offer to pay my tuition. There are a lot of jobs out there that offer it.
Even if I wanted pre professional undergrad I’d still make my first two years at a juco and I’d live at home as long aa I could.

First 2 years at community college are free in Tennessee. So that is significantly cheaper...

Yep. I’ve already let mine know this is their route unless they earn it themselves. My tax dollars at work.
I'm pretty sure it's all paid for by lotter money rather than tax dollars.

I probably wouldn't even go to college at all.
Either get into one of the many trades that are having shortages or if you want to get into something like IT go and get a bunch of certifications and get hired and work your way up the ladder until you are in an Admin role of whatever you want to focus on.
College today seems like nothing but a big waste and indoctrination instead of education.

Both of my kids went to community college for 2 years before transferring to a 4 year school
Both of them also played soccer at community college. We gut 2 years of free college

Great idea in theory... Im going to go out on a limb and say that you went to 4 years of college. So if you had to pitch this idea to your child and they immediately say "well you went to 4 years of college... why cant I?" I'm sure that wont go as well as expected.

This is advice for other people’s kids. Their kids are different

If I were an athlete and got the two years free, sure.
Otherwise it depends on whether my credicks will all transfer to a four year school.
Or if I were going into nursing I would take the 2 year degree, start working a 3x12 at the hospital, and use the off days to go to school and level up.

You can take the entry level general classes for cheaper, plus it may help with the transition from high school to college. After two years, then transfer to LSU or whatever major university.
If you're at a good school (private or magnet), you can get either dual enrollment credit, AP credit, or test out of many entry level classes. The offerings have exploded over the past few years.

That ends at high school graduation for my kids

Only if that two year college was to get a technical degree.

Besides, I don't think we're talking about 2 vs 4, it's about starting at a JUCO and finishing at a 4 year.
And I don't really give a shite about the kids' feelings; you can make the decision to sink yourself $200k in debt at a 4 year for a "business" degree which teaches you nearly nothing useful (maybe accounting?), when you could spend $40k less at Texas State? Or, start at Blinn, transfer to Aggy, and still end up ahead financially. Nobody cares where you got hours, and only slightly more people have a superiority complex about where their diploma came from. There are some exceptions, like Internal Audit at LSU (why would you doom your kid to mind numbing SOX work??), some engineering, and professional aviation, but most of these kids aren't doing that. Marketing degrees, Mass Comm, psychology, none of those mean shite.

That’s the disconnect. Most people, in fact, do care about their kids feelings.
That’s probably why yours and your ex wife don’t like you very much and you spend all day on here bitching about it

Make sure the credits transfer. I know a few teachers who did this and graduated from LSU.
FWIW
I know a graduate from the class of 2024. He took the ASVAB and scored high enough that he was able to chose Cybersecurity training and enlisted in the Air National Guard. From enlistment to completing his training was 1 year. He was just offered a job as a Network Engineer @80k annually plus benefits. He's 20.
He has certifications but I think his security clearance is what drove his salary.
