New York is awesome. Love the people. Love the culture.
Broadway shows, however, are gay. I hate them, and they're a disgrace to America.

I'll take up for my city here.
It is definitely on the level of SF. It's not in New York's universe.
As far as American cities go...
NYC
Chicago
San Francisco
New Orleans
Seattle
Miami
The rest are somewhere below. Washington DC is the worst major city for restaurants. Just pitiful for being the center of power in the free world.
Edit: Oh, and New York is my favorite city to visit by far, and I make it there a fair amount. I would never live there.

Pretty strong assessment. DC has lots of good ethnic food, albeit not on NYC's level. There's definitely a gap beyond that, like you said.

You're correct. It is not greatest place in America, it's the greatest in the World.

I really dislike Miami, but it is a superb restaurant city. That is undeniable.

NYC is arguably top 3 in the world, only behind Paris and Tokyo.
Food, fashion, arts etc.? Yes, it is the greatest city in America, but everyone prioritizes differently. And are we talking "best city to visit" or live in? Cause I'd rather live a helluva lot more places. The Keys being at the top of my list. That's more my speed. Hell, I'll take a week in Key West over New York any day of the week. Well, unless I want a really good steak. Or deli. Or hot dog (although the last time I got shitfaced on Duval, I had the best damn hot dog ever from a stand there, but I don't recall the taste. Just that I was starving and it was there).

Been there twice. Once on a business trip and when my son graduated from Fordham University.
It's OK for a big city. Definitely not the place I'd want to live for the rest of my life. I've lived in Atlanta and New Orleans, and got tired of it. Big cities just aren't my cup of tea at this stage in my life. When you're young and single, I guess it could be OK.
For my son's graduation we ate at this Italian restaurant not far from campus. The food was good, but not stellar. Maybe I'm just used to food that actually has seasoning in it.
And I didn't find August in NYC to be all that bad. Took the Circle Line tour around the island, went to the Intrepid Museum and walked back to my hotel. New Orleans is much hotter in summer.

NYC is awesome. My grandmother would take me there every year for Thanksgiving to do her Christmas shopping.
Then I'd go all the time with a girl i dated in college who grew up on the Upper East Side. I went home with her whenever we had a break. I considered NYC as a possible relocation after college.
It really is a world class city. The food, the nightlife, the culture... Just top notch.

London sucks except for the rock and rollers they've provided.

well having to go to NYC almost throws you into a super regulated environment, which can be an issue if you're there for more than a few days or if you have a bad habit like smoking
but socially, you have to understand that going to NYC is going to be a shock to social conservatives

I went. Absolutely hated it. The people were rude.
