For this new role at work I am about to enter I get to pick where I live out of 60 markets they gave me.
I narrowed it down to 3 finalists: Houston, Salt Lake City, Fort Myers
Not all markets in the country were options that probably would have been toward the top of my list(i.e. Dallas-Fort Worth, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Montana, Cheyenne, Boise)
My Top 10 were: Houston, Salt Lake City, Fort Myers, Jacksonville, Manchester NH, Panama City-Tallahassee, Memphis, Indianapolis, Peoria IL, Augusta GA
Markets I did not even consider: Seattle, San Francisco, NYC, Boston, Washington DC, Chicago

(2) Why do people in Dallas suck?
Not everyone in Dallas sucks. I have friends and family from Dallas. A city of 1.3 million (metro close to 7 million) is going to have its good and bad apples.
However, certain cities are known for a particular aura and type of person it attracts. Dallas, arguably, attracts more $30,000 millionaires and cheesy types than most.
I mean, I've seen several "Keep Dallas Douche" stickers around. Take that for what little it is worth.

I just spent two weeks in Newport, R.I., and thought it was awesome.

As someone who lived in Dallas-FW for the first 25 years of my life anyone who denies the fact that Dallas is chock full of $30k millionaires is in major denial
They are all over the place
When I worked at a bank I knew the entry level employees there made about $30k and yet they still would lease BMWs and Mercedes and stuff.
What's worse than a $30k millionaire are the $150k billionaires. The families who are in debt up to their eyeballs just so they can live in an exclusive place like Highland Park, Southlake, and such. Who are one penny short away on their paycheck from the whole house of cards to come crashing down. All so they can say they live in Highland Park and keep up with the Joneses.

Bend, OR would be high on my list. Something to do year-round, and it's smaller than Layfayette (but has almost as many breweries as the entire state of Louisiana).

Maui,Key west or chalmette. Hard to choose. Pacific northwest too wet.

Denver. Preferably Boulder, CO.
You can get a nice house in Denver for $250k-$300k. The wildnerness of the rockies in driving distance. Health conscious state. NFL football team. Good schools towards the Boulder area. Cool cultural events with the large Mexican population there. Sunny weather despite being a colder area.

Dallas was a much better place in the 80's and 90's. Now there's too many transplants and more traffic than it can handle.

I've lived in Austin and DFW, honestly I thought at the time they were both great but now I'm not so sure.
I currently live right across the river from DC and very much like it. I'd probably also enjoy Denver, Boulder or Seattle. Oddly, I'd probably like Manhattan too but for different reasons.
Mostly I'm just glad I got the hell out of BR before it was too late.

Dallas has become the douchebag capital of the USA. It's like a mecca for these Jos A. Bank, ego stroking 30k dollar millionaires, that drive around in their C class sedans and Corvettes waving pistols at people that piss them off on the highway, like they're supposed to be feared or something.
You'd have to experience it to understand.

Honestly, probably San Antonio. It's just too beautiful to pass up and so much to do

Probably Santa Barbara, CA.
