Lots of floor plans in my neighborhood have walk out finished basements. We didn't select one at the time we built and we've always regretted it.

If I dig a 2 ft. deep post hole in my back yard it starts filling with water in Mid-City New Orleans.
So that's a big no for ever wanting a basement in the N.O. area. Probably WAY more trouble than it's worth to have one living below sea level.

Daylight walk-in basements are great. Ours in MT gets almost as much sunlight as the main floor. Windows all the way up to the knee wall and only a little of it is below grade. Mostly finished living space. Left a storage room/shop that will one day be another bedroom.
Same in Upstate SC re: grade. Only like 8 ft of one wall is about a foot below grade. Rest of walls are above. It’s basically just the “terrace level” of the house. Finishing it out now.

I grew up in south LA / south MS and never knew of anyone with a basement.
My wife is from Alpharetta and we built new in north Georgia a couple of years ago and it is very common here with the topography accommodating daylight basements to the backyard. They are freaking awesome.
Our full finished basement walks out to backyard/swimming pool and it’s where all of our social time is spent. Best part is it keeps all the kids traffic off the main floor.

Just about everyone in CO has one. I love mine, it's my man cave. Bar, pool table (ping pong tops when we want to play that), dart board, multiple TVs, etc. It's always cool down there in the summer and the heat keeps it warm enough in the winter. Also has a guest room and full bathroom.

Half the posters on the OT live in their mom's basement.

Grew up in WI with a finished basement and it was awesome. We didn't have AC until I was in HS, so the basement was always much cooler than upstairs. When I had friends over, we hung out in the basement and it felt like we were separated from my parents upstairs.
Did your Dad threaten to put his foot up your arse a lot? Did you own a Vista Cruiser, and was your sister a slut? If so I may know you.

If you already have one, what's the best part?
Anyone in Louisiana below I-20 have one?
As others have stated, it's always cool down there. I can take a nap in my basement in July. Need the ceiling fan on, but other than that, it's nap city. One of the corners allows some water in if it pours for a couple of days, but a humidifier helps with that. Got a little bar area down there as well. Basements are awesome if you can stop yourself from buying crap and storing it there.

My sister has one. Her husband has a bunch of Warhammer figurines and boards all over the place. He also brews beer down there.
If I had one, it would probably just be a mancave with dead animals and shite.

I would love to have one and make it a man cave but living in S Louisiana I have to settle for my man loft. Basically a 300 sq ft bonus room above my garage. Warm up there in the summer.

Having a basement keeps my garage free for my vehicles.

If we could, I would want one. Would turn it into the kids Thunderdome so all of their crap can stay out of the family room

As in just random dead animals all over the floor?

My MawMaws house is in Chauvin, its 10' off the ground on pilons. I would rather have that than a basement. You can park under it, have a cook out, keep a boat. The extra yard space is nice.

Basements are awesome. At a minimum great storage but done right can be anything above ground can be.

I had one 3/4 underground in uptown Nola. It had a sump pump bc it would flood when it rained hard. THe new owner wanted to seal it and make a usable room out of it, but I doubt that was possible. He was from California, so I just told him that'd be awesome.

Would love a basement. I'd turn it into a dedicated Audio / Theater room.

I feel like if I had a basement I'd be down there getting trashed more often than I'd like.
Something about a big screen and a basement bar that would be dangerous I think.
Mine stays about 65* year round. Its awesome.
