He applied for and maxed out every card he he could for his children and wife, took out loans to buy then them things, vacations, etc.
So he fricked them over? If the family members aren’t co signers they can’t go after them individually but the debts will be settled by the estate. So no inheritance for them.
I suppose he could have gifted or signed over all his money and property to them beforehand. Not sure how that would go with creditors.

just strikes me as so weird that she did all of this unpleasant stuff right before killing herself
One of the variants of suicide, especially in the vet community, seems to be the desire to just not be a burden to people any more. The bill paying may have been part of the, "it'll be easier on others if I'm just not here," step.
As far as the rest of the thread, I'm confused as to why everyone thinks that if you sign up for a credit card loan in your name, not a joint account, the "community" is responsible for it. Oh, they'll ask alright, but that doesn't mean it needs to be paid. Ex BIL tried to scrounge up (his, her estate was -0-) money to pay his mom's bills after she died, and I never understood why.

This is my goal to be debt free and leave everything to my only kid. I don't want to leave tons of credit card debt so they can come after my estate and leave him with a hassle. There will be a nice bit of generational wealth and land passed down that he won't want to walk away from to just not deal with it.

Yep. A lot of people don't understand how unsecured debt works when you die.

Serious question, I know that if the person was still alive, the credit card company could sue him and get a judgement against him. Could they sue after he dies and get a judgement (and possibly paid) from his estate?

Terrible idea for your heirs.
Reading comprehension is not your strong suit.

From the estate yes. I believe it would be through probate. Please note that I am not an estate attorney.

My dad did this to live on while he was dying. Re-fi'd the house with credit life to pay it off.
This happened to a guy I know. His mom died and his dad had spent a fortune in care for her prior to her death so he re-fi’ed the house. Well, when he died, the bank came to collect. His sister and BIL were evicted and had no idea how a house they grew up in could be upside down.

If you are terminally ill, would you max out all the credit cards you can, loans, etc. ?
If I was terminally ill, I would convince Musk, and the regulatory authorities, to let me be the first human in one of his Starship test flights. They would get valuable test data and I would get an incredibly unique experience. And if the test flight succeeds I would something else along those lines. Maybe join a PMC in Africa.

Gotcha. I wasn’t sure which area of the law you worked in but I figured “close enough”

What is the actual fraud?
The fraud is present because you are accepting the funds with no intention to pay it back. The credit card agreement is a contract and you are knowingly breaching it by acting so. It's fraudulent to knowingly run up credit card bills with the intention of filing bankruptcy too. It is the intent under which you received, and subsequently used, the funds that makes it fraudulent.

My grandma had lung cancer and was given six months to live. She moved in with my parents. She sold her home to my uncle for $5K(double wide worth about $20K) her car to my aunt for $500(worth about $3K) and racked up $30K in CC debt between 2-3 cards. My grandpa had died 4 years earlier. Creditors called my mom and tried to get her to pay. My mom just hung up on them every time. It took about a year or so but they finally stopped calling.

The spouse is liable. I had a guy I worked with years ago. His wife was terminal as was wracking up CCs with medications. He had to refinance house to pay off debt.
