Assuming you are at the true, geographic South Pole, the question has no meaning. There is no "west" or "east" of that point. The same would be true if you were at the north pole. East and west are defined relative to non-terminal aspects of latitude. Phrased another way, all points of longitude converge at the poles.

Here is one response I have received.

quote:

Actually, longitude lines would still tell you west or east based off of the prime meridian (which cuts thru part of eastern Africa and Spain as well) which is at 0 degrees. So if you are the north/south pole and you take a step in any direction you are standing on a longitude/latitude therefore the only way to never go east or west and continue directly north/south would be to walk on the prime meridian exactly. If you stepped even a millimeter off the pole and were not on the prime meridian, everything would be to your east west north or south. If you did not follow the prime meridian and swim to Africa then you would be moving either north east or north west. I have attached photos to help better understand the longitudes and how they work. So simply this means if you were not on the prime meridian and moved even the most miniscule measurement away from either pole you would be moving northwest or north east.

That's a great response, but that fool's whole response is about what direction you're moving when you're NOT on the South Pole.

Fire that idiot.

You should fire that person.

The prime meridian is completely irrelevant to the question.

Move 1 inch in any direction, turn 90 degrees to your left. You are facing west.

Is there sunlight? If so where the sun sets I guess, however often that may be. Though any direction is technically north if you are standing exactly on the pole.
