If we are being honest, are sidewalks sometimes a waste of money?

Especially in many Southern towns.

I am sure many of you can think of modern, new sidewalks that were built with all the bells and whistles (wide, anti-slip, etc) that you have never seen anyone use.

‘You can’t have people walking in the street’ etc. There aren’t people walking anywhere in some of these places. Or at most, what, 1 person every 6 months or so?

Some places it makes sense, some places it doesn’t. Having sidewalks encourages more pedestrian friendly development going in. People need to get out of their frickin cars more.

Most neighborhood sidewalks have been constructed like shite. Unlevel, broken sections, no transitions at street corners forcing you to have to step off the curbs.
I run through neighborhoods and I would use the sidewalks if I didn't care if I twisted my ankles every time out.

In the past year or two Ive noticed a lot of walkers and cyclists in my little town. Most clearly doing it out of necessity. Owning some kind of motorized transport is out of reach of the bottom rung now. Used to, everybody could afford some kind of hoopty. Not anymore. I imagine some of them are afoot due to a DWI. Some of them probably spend their money on drugs. Others are just po'.

No, I will tell you what is a waste of fricking money. Having a side walk abruptly end, and then having a sign put up at the ending of the sidewalk that says, "End of sidewalk" or something gay to that effect. I see that shite all the time in this dumb frick town I work in.

The sidewalks in my neighborhood get a ton of use. It blows my mind that so many neighborhoods don't have them.

Tax money pays for sidewalks, so pedestrians and bicyclists can be safe from street traffic. And if sidewalks were used in that way I’d be a supporter of that relatively small expense.

But in three different places I’ve lived, I’ve seen bicyclists using the street instead of the sidewalk and yelling at the traffic passing them.
