re: If we are being honest, are sidewalks sometimes a waste of money?

I just walked a mile on sidewalks in mid city around the city park area. It was beautiful seeing all the flowers, shrubs, and trees along the walk.

I’ve gotten two tickets in my neighborhood for blocking side walk. Someone on Nextdoor app complained about people parking on street and blocking sidewalks. After 2 tickets my roommates and I have basically been forced to park on street, especially when the SO’s are around. Cops told us the same reason they can ticket us for blocking the sidewalk is same reason it’s legal to park on street, so neighborhood holds no grounds to fine us. City owns the sidewalk and street. So now when you drive through neighborhood you’re squeezing through streets and waiting for cars because it’s too tight to pass.
Moral of story, I have no actual objection to the ticket, law is law. But pick your battle, because outcome can be worse. And I’ll be lookin for a no sidewalk neighborhood in future.

Many municipalities must install them to be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Yes they are a huge waste of money. Right after the 2011 tornado here in Tuscaloosa the city had to install sidewalks in all the affected areas. Then a couple years later the state decides to widen and change the medians on HWY 82 (McFarland Blvd), to do so required the removal of the sidewalks and then re-installation of them a few feet away.
I drive this road everyday (several times a day) and have maybe seen 15-20 people using the sidewalk in the last 3 years.

When we were house shopping my wife refused to look at neighborhoods without sidewalks. We have a dog and a kid and it's nice to walk the dog or let my daughter loose on her bike and not worrying about her riding in the street.

People use sidewalks in my neighborhood all the time. I was to kick the shite out of people that block them with garbage cans and vehicles.

There aren’t people walking anywhere in some of these places. Or at most, what, 1 person every 6 months or so?
That's sad that so many people live in places like that.
On my earlier Nola walk it was just so nice to see people on their porches talking with neighbors while drinking coffee. Smelling the bacon cooking in houses with the windows open. Listening to a guy strum his guitar on the porch swing. Stopping to chat with people. Just about everyone said hello.
Of course this is different than most areas because the houses are literally 10 to 15 feet from the sidewalks, but it just makes it feel like a cool little community.

Damn dude, you could have come up with a better topic for your civil engineering thesis than this.

Why would people walk down the busiest street in Tuscaloosa? Especially when we have numerous parks (many with running trails in them) and the Riverwalk.
My point is that the city was mandated to install sidewalks where absolutely nobody uses them. That money could have been spent creating walking trails in one of the parks or near Lake Tuscaloosa. But no, in order for Tuscaloosa to receive Federal grants for the rebuilding after the tornado we were required to do a bunch of stupid crap that benefits nobody.
And LOL at someone from Louisiana making snide comments about exercise. I forgot that your state was the most fit, crossfitters in the country.

Scottsdale has numerous parks with trails in them as well. As well as mountains with real hiking trails. Yet we still have sidewalks everywhere that people utilize all the time (even on the busiest streets).

This is a busy thoroughfare with no real living areas adjacent. The sidewalks there are nice now, but they are mainly used by homeless/vagrants.
But I won't deny that Alabamians could walk more than they do.
