Wisconsin and Michigan. The winters have lost some of their bite, and each state has an incredible amount of what is functionally ocean front property. Door county in WI is awesome and the east side of Lake Michigan is one of the better areas in the country to spend a summer. Endless days with the sun setting late over Lake Michigan.

Both are great outdoor states with solid small and mid sized cities.

So basically what you’re looking for is a place you can have your klan rallies?

Vermont.

Prettiest state in the eastern 1/2 of the country IMO. A lot of it is untouched.

Most states have nice places. The nice places that are underrated are becoming few and far between.

I was just in Asheville. Wonderful city but it’s not like it’s a hidden gem. Same with Charleston or Greensville.

Also, overrated and underrated is entirely subjective. For example, someone said the gulf coast of Mississippi and another replied with the dumb OT response of “we are full”. I’d rather kill myself than live there. But that’s just my opinion.

Arkansas, but don't tell anybody.

Ditto. Even somewhere like Russellville is pretty nice and the people are normal.

It all depends on if you need to work in a decent (6 figures +, the trades don't count) career in that state or not.

I agree with your post overall but why is this dumb?

For some places, what makes them nice is that they’re not a destination for a lot of people.

You are correct in what you said. I have a hunting camp there and I would move to MS in a heartbeat. After my youngest graduates high school I plan on downsizing in La and up-sizing in ms.

The northwoods of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan are pretty great, but their major cities run the show and bring down all three states.

It’s just a very common response that’s meant to say “our place is so perfect let’s keep that between us and we don’t want people here.” Often used in already known areas, so it doesn’t make sense in the context other than to say “shhh our place is special and we keep the secret key to happiness here”

I’ve seen it used for places like Katy, Texas. Not exactly a hidden gem. And in this thread for the Gulf Coast of Mississippi. Completely unheard of.

frame it as you like. Any place limited in ghetto culture is fine.

and that ghetto culture is applicable to any and all ethnicities. Leave the ghetto (or trailer park or Favela), behavior behind.

New Hampshire. No state income tax, no sales tax, low ish population, and pretty good outdoors scene.

Downside is darkness and cold during winters. That’s what Florida is for though.
