Even with all the meth and hillbillies I feel like Appalachia is pretty nice

NC is so middle of the road it gets left out a lot. Typically mentioned you see SC, ID, UT, TN. NC is just over there chilling with great higher education, decent enough schools (could be better), research, sports, beach access, and natural beauty.

I pick NC

people love to shite on Alabama but its not a bad place to be. Huntsville, Birmingham suburbs, parts of Mobile and Fairhope, gulf shores and orange beach are all great places to live and raise a family. Of course there are areas that the stereotypes exist for a reason, but obviously don't live there.

ETA: the NE part of the state does catch the foothills of Appalachia which is nice, but wish it was a little more mountainous like north Georgia. However, I do like that you have the ability to drive from a mountain cabin to the coast/FL panhandle with ease.

if my wife didn't hate cold weather I'd do rural Maine and New Hampshire in a heartbeat.

living here the majority of my life, I've seen MS at its worst and what I believe was its best, the 80's. Jackson was still a great place to go then. I do think we're on the rise though with reforms to our education and the no state taxes in the pipeline. For all the grief he gets, Tater Tot has actually been a good governor and has brought some money in to the state. The cost of living is still the best in the country and the coast is a great place to visit.

Arkansas is underrated. It’s a laughingstock of the country but there’s parts of it that are pretty sweet.

I think Alabama is probably the pick, TBH.

It's lumped in with Louisiana and Mississippi but has an economically viable, boring quality of life city neither of them can match in Huntsville. Mountain Brook is probably the best all around community in all three states and competitive elsewhere, and Birmingham has some other very livable areas that rival/exceed BR and NO.

Fairhope area and Auburn area are both strong.

South Carolina has been a top destination for movers for awhile now. Seems like the secret is out and it is appropriate rated now. I think it was in the top 5 for % pop growth this past year.

Mississippi is definitely underrated. I didn’t realize it until I moved here for a job.

I’m gonna go with two states that border “overrated” Texas.

Arkansas- mainly just the Northwest part of the state. It’s really beautiful country. Thriving economy bringing in jobs and new businesses among the existing ones. SEC sports access right there in Fayetteville. Plenty of outdoors to do. Milder summers. Only drawback is how remote it is. NWA is great once you get there but it’s just so far from many places. You almost have to fly everywhere vs being able to make quick road trips.

Oklahoma- multiple parts of the state are very beautiful country. You’ve got the booming tourism of southeastern Oklahoma around broken bow. Then you can go north from there along the foothills of the ozarks and hit some beautiful lakes and mountains. OKC is a very clean and well managed city with plenty of amenities. Tulsa is another good city that has all you’d need. Then the southwestern part of the state has the Wichita Mountains. Less crowded than broken bow with equally nice outdoors things to do and see. Oh and as if 2024 now you also get your SEC sports access via Norman. Most of the state is close to DFW so you can do what you need to do down there without having to live there.

Severely underrated. I love how cheap everything is, how few people there are and the overall lifestyle. It’s a true gem and I laugh my arse off when national media pushes the narrative that it’s an awful place.

If I had the work, I’d definitely consider Madison, Tupelo, Oxford or Ocean Springs.

Southern Indiana is really under the radar. Dirt cheap. 85% white. Low crime rates. Good education. A culture that borrows the best from the South and Midwest but leaves the worst. Four seasons without the weather extremes you see further north (cold) and south (hot). Tons of park land. It lacks big city amenities but Louisville, Indianapolis and Cincinnati are not too far away.
