If not for primates, what creature would have dominated the planet?

I'm thinking it would be cephalopods. Though they don't have much brain mass, they definitely make the most of it. Octopuses especially have displayed very complex behavior. I've seen one unscrew the top of a bottle to get at the crab that scientists had placed inside. They can also mold and shape their bodies any way they want, from paper thinness to any shape they wish to copy, complete with perfect color mimicry. They have escaped more aquariums than any other species.
Their biggest problem is that they get eaten a lot, but like soft, pink humans, I think they'd have eventually perfected ways to survive and evolve. If not for us, I think they'd be the shape-shifting, multi-digited masters of the galaxy by now. shite, who knows? Maybe they are.

Canine or feline.
They pretty much do anyway.

Insectiod aliens are always portrayed as the epitome of malice in every movie I've ever seen. frick those guys. And reptiles are fricking simpletons. They'd never make it to the big leagues.
Pods like to get freaky.

Insects have dominated for millions of years, still do, and likely will for millions more. Don't believe me? Ask a pest control technician.

Pitt Bulls. BRPD doing work though to keep them in check.

Birds. They have adapted to harsh conditions, can travel thousands of miles in search of food source or escape from disaster. Incredibly intelligent.

Insects. The only think keeping them small now is a lack of lungs and there is some species in the Himalayas that has started to evolve a rudimentary active air exchange process. Once they develop the ability to actively oxygenate there tissues, it’s game over man. Game over.

If you really wanted to be a thread wiener, you could have said dust mites or paramecium or something like that.

Cephalopods have been around a lot longer than primates or I'm pretty sure even mammals. They had their chance. If they were going to take it then it would have happened already.

Primates do not dominate the planet. That's done by our masters, bacteria.
