Whelp I can't exactly turn mine off when there's a customer impact. People can't exactly use e911.

Right, I realize that I'm in a unique situation as my client handles on-call after hours stuff, but there are probably a lot of jobs that don't require overtime or working outside of "normal" working hours.

Louisiana has been in a state of idiocracy for well over a century now.

spelling checks

This is dumb. Elementary/middle school is the time to perfect a child's grammar and spelling, so that teachers don't have to waste their time dealing with it once they get to an age where the actual content of the paper matters.

In college or high school courses (at least AP/honors), teachers explicitly tell you that grammar/spelling isn't what they're grading on. However, that is with the expectation that you've mostly perfected it by being graded on it throughout elementary and middle school.

If that's your job for the next 30-40 years, then I feel sorry for you.
Congrats on your career in customer service...

Dude, so many other areas of the state don't grade homework, it is fricking stupid. As a teacher I end up grading more parents work when I use to give it. Now the only homework I assign is classwork they do not finish.

And we don't see a correlation between a lack of HW & LA's educational rankings...?

Nope, not really because guess what the kids that take the time to do their home work are the ones putting in work in the class, the ones who don't do homework usually don't put the work in class, the ones that have their parents do it for them, expect the answers to be given and while they may be bright they don't want to work and figure it out themselves. You can put as much money into the school system as you want but parents matter.

If you pull New Orleans and Baton Rouge out Louisiana doesn’t rank that bad

Don’t agree with the cheating part.
You cheat, you fail. That’s how it is in the real world.

I agree with the homework part. My 7 year old comes home with 2 hours of common core homework. No time for after school activities or play.

Lafayette has become too "progressive" now.
Yes. This is what happens when soccer takes over.

Does your company give you work that you have to perform outside of working hours?

I know mine doesn't. If they want me to work, it's during working hours. They don't say, "when you get off of work, I want you to perform these tasks."

not everyone is waiting tables or fixing toilets.

most professionals spend substantial hours outside of paid/office/billable hours working. its part of preparation and staying on top of their field.

if all you're doing is sitting in a control room for 8-10 hours, I can see your point. But its not the same for other professions.

I'm doing alright bud, if I get to work from home while making a great income for the next 20-30 years I'll be in a good place. It's a little more than customer service, but I wouldn't expect you to understand with the limited info I've given here. I'm not sitting in a call center answering phone calls from people who need IT help.

frick this mindset. I work to make a living, my life doesn't revolve around my work.

That's your choice and I respect that, however, I cannot simply just move up the ladder by staying status quo. Not to mention my industry (Telecom) is on the brink of major change (5G) and the way we look at connecting people.

My Lab is an all technologies lab. This requires my 32-year-old self to understand GSM (a technology that came out when I was in grade school) among WCDMA/LTE/LTE-U/LAA and now 5G.

A lab was literally canned yesterday for being an only LTE lab.

I hope your doctor/lawyer/dentist/accountant/pilot of the plane you're flying on doesn't have the same attitude.

Those are just a few professionals who need to, and do, spend time away from the office advancing their skills and knowledge base.

Trying to force homework on kids to develop "professional work ethic" is retarded. There's a fine line between a decent amount of homework and having to spend 3-4 hours

I go to training classes and take tests to keep my certifications valid (I actually took two exams in the last two weeks and have another scheduled for Monday), but it's on company time.

I've recently made it to a point where I'm no longer chasing dollars and trying to move up. I'm pretty content with where I am (financially and work/life balance). I'm not going to throw that balance out of whack for few dollars and more stress.
