In the modern world we have the medical technology to provide the lifelong care they need and assistance programs to provide extra support.
At the expense of the parents.
I’m not saying I agree with it, but having been in a situation with my child where ultrasounds painted a pretty grim picture and doctors were recommending abortion, without actually recommending it, I can understand the crossroads for parents.

I know that was a typo, but i think it is the correct word.

Everyone is convinced their life is supposed to be this fairy tale that is free from anything other than paying bills and doing the day to day. How far does the argument go? A child gets sick with cancer, a parent comes down with Alzheimer’s. Are you permitted to get rid of them because it’s a life of complication?
I’m simply saying that with all the advancements of modern medicine, we’ve also created these situations of overwhelming burden on families that otherwise wouldn’t have existed. It is a bit of a double edged sword for society.
Years ago if a baby was born and couldn’t breathe, it died. Now, doctors and machines can keep it alive, even if it will never walk, talk, or move from its bed. It isn’t just abortion, it’s people involved in accidents, disease/illnesses later on as well.
IMO its just an awesome paradox.

but having a child that is going to be with you and will liley need to be cared for for 60+ years until you're elderly is truly a life-altering event, for potentially your entire remaining life.
You know what else is actually life altering? Taking the life of the child that may or may not burden or bless your life as a whole. I'd say that's more "life altering" than raising a child with downs.

It’s eugenics no doubt.
It’s sickening, I’d get if it had to happen if this involved a child, someone who was raped, but for two consensual people who have the means to upbring a child in the world, it’s just evil

Which is why I agree with what another poster said in this thread. This is where government assistance should really step in.

From someone with almost zero experience with downs, it seems like the kids are just, if not more, happy as other kids. But when they enter adulthood things aren't as easy. Weight gain looks to be a big problem.
Ozempic has been a miracle drug for her because it was becoming a big issue

So tell me, how many lives have you and other righteous posters on this site never even gave a chance because they ended up in a sock or elsewhere? Have you also ever consciously chose to not have kids or stop having kids? Any and all of them may have blessed your life as a whole, after all.

Wait, are you stupidly arguing that a man's sperm and a woman's ovaries, inside their bodies, unfertilized, are human beings? Is that your justification for Eugenics? Life begins at conception, but you believe life begins at what point? I want you to intelligently lay this out for us. I want to see your "gotcha" that you think you have.

This is your rebuttal?
We are talking about formed humans.
I watched a family lose their son to a form of trisomy. He was born and lived a month. They celebrate his short life everyday. Then, their next child, their daughter, was born with Downs. She is a complete joy. I finally got to meet her. She is smart, sassy and wonderful. To think that someone would have killed her & her brother is awful.

Imagine if there was a screening for homosexual children and people were aborting fetuses because they didn’t want a gay child “because their life would be complicated.”
The left would be in the streets protesting.

Be proud of that.
All I know is this, when a kid or an adult with Downs gives you a hug....they fricking mean it. Something very pure about people with Downs.

This might be the worst take in OT history. And that would be quite an accomplishment.

My ex has a child with downs syndrome from her second marriage, and the young man is full of life and happy.
I'll never understand the people who think it merits a death penalty.
It's a horrible decision I hope I am never faced with, but I can understand why some choose that path.

I hate to use a pop culture reference for a subject so serious, but in this case it’s appropriate.
Back in Star Trek: TNG, the Chief Engineer, Geordi LaForge was born blind. He wears a visor that lets him “see” by scanning electromagnetic wavelengths and dumping them into his brain. In one episode, they come upon a planet where everyone has been genetically engineered to perform a specific role in society. Everyone has a predetermined place, and that is that. No changes, no exceptions. When this Perfect Society was started, it became policy to abort all children with any kind of imperfections. This offended Geordi, who was thankful he wasn’t conceived there.
“Who the hell are They to determine what kind of contribution I can make?”
That line has stuck with me ever since. Whenever someone brings up abortion for “imperfections “, or genetically engineering humans, I think about it.

two consensual people who have the means to upbring a child in the world,
What are the statistics of the couple breaking up as the child ages? Someone here mentioned his ex-wife has such a child. Not she and her husband had had a child.
I've known folks with children with other problems. The supports that are there now were scarce or absent for families with retarded children in the 50's. One contemporary of mine was such a child and our parents remained friends. After funerals I got to talk to them in detail about how their son grew up. His parents were at the forefront of getting care and setting him up for life. It wasn't easy, but they were smart and determined.

“was disappointed that over 62% are supposedly Christian”
You might be amazed at how many Catholics vote Democrat, the party of nearly unlimited abortion.
I was raised Catholic, went to Catholic schools, all 12 years. Many of my old classmates are die hard Democrats, still go to mass regularly, recieve communion, consider theirselves good Catholics, some of my relatives also.
I’ve asked a couple of them what kind of mental gymnastics they do to call themselves Catholics and yet vote for party that advocates for abortion.
They get pissed.
More unbelievable is the head chaplain,a Catholic priest at a Catholic hospital I worked at was also a confirmed Democrat, was pretty vocal on his support for Dem.candiates for President-Gore,Kerry,Hillary.
He and I got in some pretty heated arguments.
