Most of our homes built in the past 10 years have been built to 155mph “Miami-Dade” code. I wonder if there are insurance/legal implications for officially observed CAT 5 designations.

Please not this observation again.

I can remember the rumors last year that if Ida was 5 that your deductible was waived. Don’t bite on the hype.

Now, it would be a test on damage. If homes built to post Andrew/Miami Dade standards suffered little to no damage, then those homes should be easier to continue to offer insurance due to the new building codes.

But after the last few years of homeowners insurance claims most companies are running from the coastal markets. A state rep in coastal Louisiana was quoted 10 grand a year for insurance. Luckily, he found another policy for 4,500. I pay approximately 10-12k in mortgage payments, and if I had to pay another 10-12 in insurance, I don’t know what I would do.

This is just like how Ida went from strong hurricane to bomb during the overnight hours before landfall.

Last NHC advisory was still calling for 140mph sustained winds at landfall.

I understand that, but those winds are in the NW eyewall. With the approach Ian will be taking at landfall, those winds will be offshore for a little bit.

As I said, it’s a silver lining in an otherwise terrible scenario.

I really didn’t have any info, just wondering. Fortunately, my home was built 3 years ago and we’ve never tested any of those parameters. Best of luck to you and yours.

Good luck to all you folks who are dealing with this storm. Saddens me to think of the damage Punta Gorda and Charlotte Harbor are gonna suffer. Such a beautiful estuary. Glad to be just an observer for this one, but can empathize and sympathize with all of you property owners. Prayers and good luck to you all.

I don’t see what’s going to hold back Ian from C5 strength but at this point it could just be splitting hairs. Lots of new Floridians that haven’t experienced a major hurricane will get a taste of reality if they’ve stayed. It’s truly a hopeless feeling to be at the mercy of a hurricane and to feel so vulnerable and out of control.
