Thanks for posting that. Was hoping to wake up to that air tripping this thing up. Damn

I don’t see what’s going to hold back Ian from C5 strength but at this point it could just be splitting hairs. Lots of new Floridians that haven’t experienced a major hurricane will get a taste of reality if they’ve stayed. It’s truly a hopeless feeling to be at the mercy of a hurricane and to feel so vulnerable and out of control.
People there experienced Charley's 4 mile wide eye, even though it was a major hurricane, it is incomparable to this monster

Checking in from Sarasota. Rained all night (got up a few times to look outside) and wind is really picking up now. I haven’t read all the posts I missed overnight so forgive if I’m just repeating others, but Phillips just posted on his FB sustained winds now at 155mph and tracking NNE. No bueno for our area.

It was for a few hours last night during the end of the eyewall replacement cycle. But the western eye wall exploded with hot towers and had enough condensation and latent heating to beat back the dry air that reached the core and this thing exploded.

Radar is still showing some openings in the eyewall on the ESE side. Hopefully that can be maintained.

Another thing to keep in mind with all the folks from non-storm states now living in FL is post-storm safety. You’re going to have a lot of people using generators and chainsaws that have no business doing so.

Just for perspective on how physically big Ian is, he hasn’t officially made landfall south yet, but St. Augustine is already now getting rain from his outermost body.
This entire state is gonna soak for a loooooong time while he moves across/up.

Stay safe out there. Things will go downhill fast once it starts.

one of my dogs sniffed these things out. amazing we didn't see the mom all weekend.
back on topic, and I know I keep harping on this dry air entering the SE quadrant, but 2-3 days ago this was happening just off the coast of tampa which broke up the eye right before landfall. now that's happening even further SE than just yesterday. the eye really seems to retain its tight core structure much further inland now which is really getting scary now.

I'm zooming around on google earth, exploring areas that are about to be hit hard. What's the story with the massive area of tightly gridded roads just east of Ft. Meyers that are only partially to minimally developed? Is that area fallout from 2008?

It’s an incredible storm. I’m less interested in incredible storms after IDA pushed my shite in.

UPDATED surge from new advisory
12 to 16 feet PLUS battering waves will be total devastation in some areas.
I really hope everyone is out of there.

I'd prefer not to test my new roof anytime soon.

Only hope is that after clearing out for a little bit the eye is already starting to collapse on water vapor and IR. It would be nice for it to start recycling soon. It would expose it to some dry air again.

We are already seeing effects here on the South Carolina coast.

Are there signs of this?

Just text my sister, she lives in Safety Harbor (Pinellas Co) ….no response but this storm got me nervous.
ATT has got about 600 cell towers that will be facing hurricane force winds down there so, I’m pretty sure cell service gonna be spotty for y’all until they can drop their deployables
