If it is south of Tampa, even if it's not south of Tampa by very much, Tampa would be in more of an offshore flow (hurricanes rotate counter-clockwise). Meaning the winds would be blowing more offshore than onshore. So water would be pushed outward rather than being piled in.

A good example of how little distance it takes is how Panama City Beach was spared from the worst surge during Hurricane Michael. PCB was in the western eyewall and had an offshore flow, while Mexico Beach was in the eastern eyewall and had an onshore flow. PCB had terrible weather, but avoided the worst storm surge.

Why is a nautical mile longer than a land mile?

Is it because you have to account for the waves?

For those who don’t know how to convert knots to mph, Google a knots to mph calculator.

That’s just being lazy though. 1 knot = 1.151 mph

My son lives in St. Augustine and he text me a few minutes ago and said local news broke in and they increased all the warnings for St. John's County. They said the storm surge there will be historic.

Loogle for the win.

Nautical miles are used to measure the distance traveled through the water. A nautical mile is slightly longer than a mile on land, equaling 1.1508 land-measured (or statute) miles. The nautical mile is based on the Earth's longitude and latitude coordinates, with one nautical mile equaling one minute of latitude.

For anyone still wondering if they should leave, while there is extremely heavy winds and rain & debris flying, tornadoes spit out of these things too. I'd GTFO

Well, we've made it to 4 decimal places. Anybody got 5?

Okay, I'll go: 1.15078.

The wet cougars will be on the hunt for those pythons.

Matthew went over 9 feet, maybe 10-15 miles south of the bridge of lions. Right at the Flagler/st johns county line A1a was entirely washed out and the intercoastal had a new flow out point into the Atlantic. Won't even be the worst this decade, for historical context

Hey people should learn conversions and formulas. What happens when a solar flare knocks out the grid and fries all the computers? No google to do it for you. It’ll be back to the Stone Age if people don’t retain the knowledge of doing scientific formulas and mathematical calculations manually

So some areas will get a stronger hurricane but those are less densely populated areas?

Is this a good thing or a bad thing? Save Tampa but other areas get F'd even harder?

Here are populations by county in the area from South to North:

Collier County (Naples): 375k
Lee County (Fort Meyers): 750k
Charlotte County (Port Charlotte): 185k
Sarasota County (Sarasota): 450k
Manatee County (Bradenton): 400k
Hillsborough County (Tampa): 1.45M
Pinellas County (St. Petersburg): 1M
