First of all soft drinks have zero to do with America's obesity issue
High calorie, sugary drinks that have no nutritional value have nothing to do with obesity? Ok. (Yes, diet and no calorie soft drinks don't apply)

I am surprised at the response - more people drinking DC and obese Americans not surprising?
Let me explain:
Overweight people tend to choose diet sodas
Americas population is becoming more obese
Therefore, more diet sodas sold

Nobody prefers the taste of Diet Coke over regular Coke. They're lying if they say they do.

Maybe not if it's the first time they've had a taste of either...but once you've drank DC for a while, Coke Classic taste like drinking syrup.
Same goes for full fat milk and skim milk. skim milk tastes like water if all you've ever had is whole fat milk. After you drink skim for a while, drinking whole fat milk is like popping open a damn container of whipping cream.
And yeah...like everyone has already said, it's a preferred taste for some and a conscious decision to not compound a shitty meal with an even worse drink. It may sound funny when ordering it, but it's pretty simple math.

I used to do this when I ate fast food. It had nothing to do with the calorie saving as it was just the flavor I enjoyed more. Regular coke was always hard to drink cause of how sweet it was. My teeth instantly felt like they had cavities. So I got diet coke cause it was just preferred. But I only eat fast food when on a long road trip so we can keep moving. Other than that I never eat it.

Yes they do.
I grew up drinking Diet Coke because it is what my mother drank, and I've never liked regular coke. It is too sweet and leaves a weird film in my mouth.
I also don't eat desserts, so it isn't really shocking that I dislike the sweeter soda.

For some it's not a matter of preference. You drink Diet Coke so that you're not drinking all of those calories every day. Eventually Coke begins to taste way too sweet and syrupy to you. You continue to drink Diet Coke even though you may not be dieting anymore.

yeah they do, that's like saying no one likes their coffee plain and black if they could have a macchiato instead.

So I just consumed 1500 calories, why would I add to it and make it 2000 calories?
Do you get mad when someone gets a DP but gets a salad? Why not get the burger and fries instead? I mean you just ordered a DP.

I know many people who prefer the taste of Diet Coke. I don't understand it because I think it tastes nasty, but I don't judge them.

This dude still doesn't get it... Even after all these replies. Wow. Hopefully he's kidding.

Coke zero. I get people like diet coke, but coke zero and sprite zero taste like shite.
Unless you started drinking soda in 2005, I don't see why anyone drinks that shite. Especially after eating fast food. Those less calories aren't doing anything at that point.

That doesn't bother me. It is the people that get a salad, say they are on a diet, and instead of getting soda they get sweet tea, because they are on a diet.

Believe it or not maybe some people like the taste.
After drinking the diet stuff for a couple of weeks, the regular soda tastes too sugary. I can understand the people that prefer it. I'm sure they don't do it because they're watching their weight.

All I'm saying is it's difficult to turn down a nice fountain regular coke on a hot summer day.

Because it's so impossible, right.

Soft drinks, whether full strength or diet are terrible for you.

A regular coke in the sizes usually served by fast food restaurants is probably 400-500 calories.
So with a 1200 calories meal, ordering a diet Coke prevents it from being a 1600-1700 meal.
I get that it's a strange choice, but avoiding 400-500 calories per, already bad meal, adds up.
