It would be great if my 2009 Accord is the last vehicle I ever get.

I drive like 25 miles a day and got a plug in hybrid. I go to the gas station never. Other car is ice. Costs me like a buck a day in electricity.

In my opinion, that’s a great use for an EV. Running light errands around town. As long as you aren’t relying on it for your only mode of transport (for trips or hurricanes or whatnot). EVs are awesome technology for certain uses. They aren’t ideal for most people though.

looks like something a gay dude or liberal woman would drive. Overall they look stupid and ugly, not to mention if the battery quits that costs more than the car

The concept of electric cars is really cool to me, but I don’t feel like we’re far enough along to make it worth it to me personally. Toyotas hybrid is a really solid set up and would highly consider one of their hybrid models on my next car.

Home every night and drives 15-20 miles/day. We have a gas burner for long trips, and looking for suggestions/comments from current EV users.
I will be researching the pros/cons, so please fire away with any real life experiences.....I have rented a few on business travel, so have a grip on the basics....
TIA

Hybrids still make more sense to buy...

For EVs, think of them like cell phones or laptops... lease them, don't buy... don't buy when lease ends, lease another brand new one. They will suffer from obsolescent software, battery degradation, etc. Take advantage of subsidies and tax things (while they exist) and consider the money you're not spending on gas (which is going to get pricey in just a bit here for a while) and maintenance. It's worth it...

I have a buddy in Atlanta whose wife commuted a ways to the office and then had to run around the city as part of her job... between her gas/mileage/vehicle allowance at work and the state and federal subsidy stuff, he PROFITED tens of thousands on leasing Nissan Leafs for her... and as a tech head he liked having the charging thing installed in the garage.

I know someone else who leased EVs for years.... They decided to just buy the last one (VW ID4) when the lease was up and... a year or two later is stuck with something or other that's going to cost $10,000 to fix...

OP, if your wife is ready to drive 5mph under the speed limit at all times, not move when the light turns green, and not understand that turning right on red is legal, then she’s ready for a Tesla.

I want self driving, not necessarily EV. The true full self driving vehicles like FSD enabled Teslas are incredible, and much safer than your average driver

Uber and Lyft are much cheaper than buying a car equipped with that...

For a commuter/local-use car it works. However, life is rarely as predictable as we wish. If she needs to go outside of her normal routine it can be tricky. You have to keep the car for long enough to wait until the benefits from not buying gasoline the outruns the higher acquisition cost. She needs to be committed, mine will agree to anything to get a new car then later she may change her mind

Not a bad idea honestly if you are just going to be a local driver and have another gas car on hand

At least consider a hybrid, it may have some resale value.

Do you have the outlet, breakers etc.

There’s been a few sub $100/month EV leases out there due to rolling in all the tax breaks. Audi New Orleans had a post of the single payment leases available or upcoming. There are some very interesting/reasonable options on very expensive cars. Check it out.

Nah. The FSD is $5-8k more on any Tesla model. Maybe $55k for one of the better Tesla models including FSD. It would pay for itself in a year or less for most people, especially anyone with kids that has to drop off/pick up. Plus Uber/Lyft are completely unreliable

$20K for batteries at 8 years

There is no way to know what battery technology, advancement and cost will be in 8 years.

8 years is a lifetime with how quickly EV tech is evolving

This is the opposite end of me, as far as Tesla. They constantly make the car better/improvements with every update. So you aren’t stuck with an outdated car/dash/media player/gps like with non EVs, you get the same upgrades and new features as current year models
