If I'm getting $700 worth of gift cards as my bonus in year 39, take me out to pasture

We do Christmas gifts at the party, but never gift cards for this reason. You can technically give an employee's spouse cash or gift cards and avoid this, but we just avoid it altogether by giving gifts and nothing tied to a traceable monetary value.

The amount of OT baws here that don't understand how taxes work on a bonus (regardless of what physical form its paid in) is telling me all the OT ballers were lying all along.

Of course.

The better companies have CEOs that take care of that crap and don't nickel and dime the employees.

Said by every disgruntled employee but known to be false by every CEO with actual financial literacy.

Before my company was bought out, they would give us nice gifts for Christmas every year, like grills, smokers, etc. and would not take taxes out. A couple of years ago we were bought out and now, the gifts are much smaller and they tax them. Corporate America sucks.

I agree with you it sucks. But the IRS has to get every penny it can so we can support the do nothings. I swear one year we got gift cards and the reason as so it didn't have to be taxed.

This is why my old boss used to just give out hams.

Thanks. It's pretty much chicken shite. Should've taken the 5th amendment when it comes to gift cards, and decline.

So...how does refusing a gift card protect you from self-incrimination?

Better than being taxed as a bonus.

That’s pretty normal. They have to add it as taxable income.

Just your average Joe and Sally who thought they would retire in Louisiana but due to absurd insurance cost, poor medical and cost of living are leaving. Even Ms. and Al are taking life-long residents. And not one person is glad they left either.

Them (correctly) taxing it costs the company more money than if they wouldn’t have

Your company is the arse for not just giving you a cash bonus. They probably got a discount for buying the cards in bulk,

I worked for a company that has a Vegas trip for top foilks. One year,we had the Black Eyed Peas for a private party with Jim Belushi as emcee. I got taxed for the full value of that trip.

Could it have not been run through as a business expense rather than independent contractor compensation?

It could have, but it would not have been as funny.
