I was on a jury this week

I’m allowed to talk about it now that it’s over.
First time in my life I’ve ever been called to the jury selection process and of course I was ultimately selected to be on the jury.
A man was charged with 2 counts of raping his own daughter, starting at the age of 3 years old. We found him guilty and sentenced him to life in prison.
This world is fricking awful. Hug (or text) your kids and tell them you love them.

Why are we even wasting resources on that piece of shite? Hang him out back and leave him for the crows

Did the girl testify? What type of evidence was presented?

If this was in Plaquemine, one of my employees was cut during voire dire by the defense because he works in IT and apparently there were computer files related to the case and because when asked if a witness disputed the charge would that cause him to vote not guilty; he replied "no" because he didn't know what other evidence was being presented.

Did you vote capital punishment? Only correct answer for this

My god. That makes me want to puke.

How many days and how long each day? Sounds pretty straight forward if you got the evidence.

You should have shot him IMO

Dude should be given to Gary Plauche (god rest his soul) as his sentence.
Hopefully they castrate him ASAP

The girl did testify. She’s 18 now. She was raped many times between the age of 3 and 13. At age 13, a woman from church who was taking care of her just about all the time was able to get temporary custody (and ultimately adopted her). Praise God for that woman.
Lots of evidence from all kinds of law enforcement who corroborated the kind of house she grew up in (crack house), heard from the detectives and police sergeants, etc etc. Was a long time ago so no physical evidence of course. Heard from others who she told about the abuse a long time ago before she told a mandated reporter recently who disclosed it and charges were filed shortly after.

That’s pretty strong.
What type of explanation did the defense offer?

Unfortunately capital punishment was not on the table.
From start to finish, the whole process took 3 business days. I think we deliberated for probably 4 hours or so on the first 2 counts. Then about another hour on sentencing later on.

It would be close to impossible for me to listen to the evidence without wanting to put a bullet through his forehead.
Horrible, repulsive crime the worst thing to inflict on a child.
Beyond my comprehension.

Basically just tried to discredit the girl’s story but she was very believable.
The defendant did not take the stand on his own behalf which we were of course informed is not an admission of guilt because they have the right to not self-incriminate. The defense called no witnesses.

The old NOPD solution: shot 16 times in the back trying to escape.

And the thing is, they have to go through all of it for the evidence of everything. So all the witnesses (including the girl, God love her) had to explain in specific detail the individual sex acts that were happening and for how long and what followed immediately after and so on and so forth. I kept wanting to change the channel on this Law and Order SVU episode because it was too graphic but it was real life.
I kinda think that’s why I made a thread about it. This is gonna stay in my head probably forever

I was on a jury many, many years ago for a first degree murder case. Dude raped, robbed and killed a 70-something year old woman. Can still see the pictures of the crime in my mind. Horrible. Gave that piece of shite the chair and have never lost a minute of sleep over the decision.

Why didn't you use the bolt cutters on him during court recess?

Thats brutal BallHawg10..
I was selected early 2024 for a medical malpractice civil trial. Was my first time ever officially being selected to be on trial. The plaintiff and defense side each called 2 different medically awarded surgeons to testify what they think was the best way to handle the situation. The whole trial made me realize the unfortunate truth about how our judicial system works. Mainly because the entire jury has no surgical background and then you have 4 guys (2 on each side) with 20+ years of experience and accolades that disagree about something that you would think is textbook from an outsider.
You basically rely on your gut instinct along with how good the lawyers are. Now imagine that in a criminal trial. frick that
Edit: My story doesn't necessarily relate to OP, but when I see a trial thread on OT, it reminds me of my time in deliberation room listening to a group of people give random arse subjective opinions about something important.
