The move would be LA to MO

The company is offering me less salary that I said I would move for

Don’t you love when people post questions with about 2% of the information necessary to properly evaluate the situation and provide actual advice?

On average, except for MS and AL, all states have more going for it than LA
Had to laugh. I love LA but lets be honest, is there really a place with a 6% lower COL than here and not residing on the continent of Africa?

Someone in Louisiana talking trash on Missouri is hilarious. KCMO, Columbia, and St. Louis are 10 times better than anywhere in Louisiana you can live even with it getting cold.

Lot of rivers to float/fish, not far from some popular lakes, and gambling is all I got. Would recommend KC, Columbia or STL burbs for places to move to in Missouri.

Or the good parts of Missouri

I am originally from LA, currently living in Missouri.
Don't do it man, stay in Louisiana.

Set your Tinder location to Joplin, MO and check out the local talent first.

I’ve never had a company pull an offer because of a counter offer.

I’d rather stay put, thanks
I've lived in both states and I have no clue how you came to this determination

You only get so many company changes before you end up stuck somewhere for a while. Plus moving and having to prove yourself at a new company sucks. Make sure those self-inflicted major life changes really count. Taking this offer and relocation for a very modest raise may be what keeps you from getting offered a 30% raise a year later.

The thread lacks info, but some of you baws have bad reading comp. Read the first line of the OP again. He never said he would be making less to relocate. He said that they offered less than what he was originally willing to relocate for.
To the Op: Even with your company covering moving expenses and a supposed 6% less in cost of living expenses, a move from LA to MO should not be considered unless they are offering you a minimum of 20% higher than what you are currently making. Or at least 15% and you know for a fact that accepting the relocation will advance your career trajectory.
Personally I would need at least a 35% bump to even consider relocating to Joplin. That’s just me. Everyone has a number. You decide what yours is and if you are on the fence and not excited about the opportunity, that is your clear cut sign to decline the offer.

I took a lateral transfer with full relo from Louisiana to central MO. Our insurance is 50% less, but taxes are higher. Utilities seem to be higher in MO. The game changer may be the state’s economy. A lot of Louisiana’s revenue is related to tourism and the oil & gas industry. The political climate is not favorable to either. If you’re able to stay and feel secure about your job, I’d stay because I love Louisiana. If not, I’d go.

So close to the promised land, but still too far away.
Perhaps you can take the job in Joplin then immediately start trying to get a foot in Northwest Arkansas?

quote:Have done this for the opportunity to succeed and advance. It can be worth it. I've taken numerous steps back to be able to take two or three steps forward.
Why would you make a lateral move?
It is not a better state.
It is a much colder climate.
Less money is less money, and has very little to do with cost of living as that metric is very fluid and can swallow you whole in a month.
The only reason for this type of move is room for advancement.
Yes I have done this and it was for more not less in an area that had significantly lower cost of living.
Company justification sounds nickel and dime.

One shithole to another? I’d stay in La at least the food is better.
