The company is offering me less salary that I said I would move for but will cover all moving expenses, but the clear understanding that I would have to move for this position.

My question is would be totally out of line or make the company nervous if I would take the offer but want to work partially remote?

I am thinking about counter offering this but I am worred that they make do away with their offer.

Counter offer within reason is fair. Have you looked at the cost of living adjustment? Is that the reason for offering less?

Definitely need more details here, bud. But my initial instinct is frick no. Offering someone less money to do the same job to relocate is pretty ridiculous, IMO.

The cost of living is about 6% less and that was their reason for doing so.

The move would be LA to MO

Put a reasonable counter on the table. Looks at time off and other items if applicable, i.e. car allowance, fuel card, phone payments, etc....

I mean if you’re moving from NYC to rural Mississippi, that dollar goes much further.

Need more details to answer.

A reasonable counter is always acceptable. Unless your company is in a spot where you know there is no leverage. Basically saying don’t look a gift horse in the mouth if this is your only option.

6% less to move from one bad place to another bad place? Hard pass if you ask me.

Did you not learn state abbreviations in Kentucky school?

Suggest you check out housing for comparable size and price. Also, many homes in Missouri have basements. Basement size is usually not included in living area. Finished basements can be a really nice extra.

Personally I would decline. Pay cut to move from one pretty undesirable place to another isn't for me.

If you think you want to stay at least medium-term with the company and if this move potentially can lead to advancement, I’d consider it.*

You can ask about the possibility of working remotely but be careful if you do so.

You’re introducing more complexity into the negotiations and without us knowing what industry/field you’re in, maybe culturally those folks aren’t ready for remote workers.

*(As long as you’re not having to move to a shithole like Dumas, AR.)

Hold up. I'd question the company's long-term financial stability in general if a 6% difference in COL prompted them to lower your salary.
It's not like you're moving from CA to MO.
