Like someone mentioned earlier, CAO 660’s are nice cigars, but not really inexpensive. For the money Man O War Ruinations are very good. Good luck!

CAO Brazilia
Anything from the Fuente Hemingway line
5Vegas for a good, cheap stick

What others suggested, try a few, keep your bands or notes of what you like.
I started out with milder cigars: Macanudo, Leon Jimenes, regular H. Upmann, Arturo Fuente with the red and green band 858 or Cuban Corona sizes, Romeo y Julieta 1875, Hoyo de Monterrey, Punch regular line are good starters. Cuesta Rey is another, CAO Gold.

My favorite brands are my father, padron, crowned heads, couple more I can’t remember.... used to smoke a lot because I lived in one of those planned neighborhoods with shops/restaurants/houses and I could walk to the cigar shop in 5 minutes... miss that place. Kids dr office, movie theater, restaurants, Trader Joe’s all within 5-10 walk. That was in Williamsburg va, had a balcony I would smoke 3-4 a week but now I do 3-4 a year it seems.

viaje
I have a love affair with Viaje, but a new cigar smoker should ABSOLUTELY NOT go this route. Most of Viaje’s sticks are small batch. That means if you find something you like, you may never get it again. I have an extensive Viaje collection because of this.
New cigar smokers should start with Fuente. Why fuente? They are by far the most consistent cigar you will find. A 5 dollar Chateau will be enjoyable. It will be completely different than an Opus, but still enjoyable. The next time you come across a Chateau, it will be just as you remember it.
The next cigar you should get into is Rocky. I’m not a big Patel guy, but rocky will expose you to a much bolder cigar and they are relatively easy to find.
Then I would suggest LFD. You can get the higher end of their line once you get to know your tastes, but to start with, try their ligeros and double ligeros.
That is a good starting point. Someone suggested Habana port in Baton Rouge. Very knowledgeable and helpful, as is the Habana Port in Metairie. Talk to those guys and they will steer you in the right direction. Once you’ve tried a few of the big labels,’move into boutiques.

It didn't end well for either of them
(or maybe she said I want to start getting cigars into me. My recollection might be off. It was so long ago)

Go to Cigars International or Thompson cigar and order you a few sampler packs to see what you like. Everyone is different so what’s good to them might not be pleasant to you.

This!
OP, start with a sampler and a small humidor. Take notes and see what you like.

My favorite brand is Alec Bradley. I love the prensados and tempus. Rocky Patel decades are great and cap v660 carbs are as well.
If just starting out get a humidor combo pack and some gel crystals to keep the proper humidity. Figure out what strength of cigars you like. Jot down some quick reference noted to help keep track. Get a decent cutter and lighter when u can. If youre getting into cigars be prepared for high end Bourbons and scotch as well

Go to for me is Arturo Fuente 858, Natural wrapper. Have also been into NUB, My father and some Rocky Patels. Try a few and see where your taste guides you. one of the enjoyable things about smoking cigars is trying new brands.

First thing to know: there are tons of excellent cigars made in dozens of countries outside of Cuba. Don't buy the hype.
Next, try a large variety. When I was starting out I went to the Cigar Merchant a couple times a month and picked up 4-5 different sticks each time. You will figure out what you like eventually.
Buy a quality humidor, cutter, lighter, and ash tray, and learn to properly light your cigar.
Enjoy!

My favorite is a cherry swisher with a wood tip. Great while fishing.

There's a cigar bar in metairie, I'm sure BR has one somewhere. Go hang out and make friends irl

La Gloria Cubana Serie R.
It’s not a Cuban. But it’s an excellent cigar. Was recommended to be by an actual Cuban at a cigar shop in Miami Gardens. Has become one of my favorites.
