Did he not come home when he was supposed to or something?

In the future, you could ask him to call from the gym when he gets there I guess, but your kid is never going to learn how to be trustworthy if your wife is up his arse 24/7 about his whereabouts. Is he prone to getting into shite he shouldn't be or something?

I’ll bet you have his location on at all times.

If it was being used that way, it wouldn’t have been confiscated. The kid was using it, and you are trying to refocus the problem with a safety dog whistle rather than the kid’s lack of discipline.

He’s going to love it up there in the hills. He took our Volvo for a ride on one of his visits and had a blast. Drop and pin then just go get lost…

Out of respect to the OP I will withhold my comments. Good luck getting the phone back.

I wish more schools did this, or told students to put their damn phones down and pay attention.

Schools shouldn't have to confiscate a phone, if their parents discipline their kids like they're supposed to. And schools typically won't go to that extreme when it's just the first time. OP's kid was almost certainly on his phone more than he should be.

The district I worked for used to take them and keep them until parents started claiming phones were "damaged" or whatever. Now you're just told if you have the phone out when you're not supposed to, you get disciplined for it. And that discipline escalates with every incident.

Have him put it away when at school and this wouldn't happen. This is on him.

There are so many people missing the point of the thread and it makes me disappointed in the OT.

Sure, his wife is being overly dramatic. Sure, the kid was wrong. Sure, they probably raised a spoiled brat.

But honestly, its a fair question. I bought the phone. I pay for it. Why does the school have the right to keep it? They can take it away and, like an earlier poster said, call the parent to get it. But they should not be keeping it.

All of the other discussion is for a different thread, IMO.

The point isn't lost I don't think. If I'm Gaston, I go get it. He hasn't and that's his choice.

It honestly doesn't sound like OP gives a shite enough to even talk to the school about why they're confiscating it given this comment:

quote:

I guess they’re supposed to turn in their phone to the office each morning…and my son has not and does not…so yea, give him Saturday school or beat him, I don’t care, but it’s odd to take something we pay for and utilize for ‘safety’ purposes…to punish him.

We always contacted a parent when we confiscated one to have them pick it up. There were a fair amount of times that parents either didn't bother coming to pick it up or just told their kid they could wait until the period was up.

This. The fact that it sounds like they blamed the school for the inconvenience rather than the kid is really telling. And the kid doubled down by “hey I know my parents will be wondering what’s going on, but who cares I’m gonna do what I want and throw in a workout sesh,” and it was still the schools fault?

I’d have grounded the kid, or made it a rule that the phone must stay in the car while at school.

IDK how a school can keep a kid’s phone for a week.

it is a bit over the top these days. I think parents should start giving more pushback on dumb shite like this. Half the time, you have highschool coaches texting and communicating with players during the day.

No you are the one missing the point and it’s your reading comprehension that is disappointing. The school won’t refuse to give it him if the parent demands it back. But the kid goes home with it. This is a policy the OP SIGNED an agreement to at the beginning of the school year. The amount of time the phone would be held was spelled out in writing for each offense and what would happen if the parent demands the phone back depending on the amount of offenses. Anybody agreeing with the OP lacks even the most basic human logic.
