Tyree came out the closet on the Rush Limbaugh show which aired either before or after his show.
I think it was a few years or months later, 99.5 went all talk and poached Rush from 870.
I think Tyree had some form of oral cancer or degenerative disease that affected his vocal cords.
870 will always have a decent stock of advertising due to the Saints and sports. If anyone challenges them and wins the Saints and LSU rights. It would be lights out on on the Big 870. Also, Entercom/Odyssey or whatever they are called now has a decent line up of stable music stations that can act as loss leaders or added value purchases if you buy advertising on WWL in New Orleans.
As far as the other talk station in Nola, 99.5 is starting to whither on the vine. Once Rush passed there was really no reason to listen. Heck, I phased out my listening to Walton and Johnson once John Walton passed. 99.5’s local news and traffic cut ins are central cast out of Clear Channel in Houston, I believe. Other than that it is all network. No local PM drive time show. Only local content is weekend paid content for mortgage and real estate.
