A work truck full of tools that he’s been accumulating his entire life doesn’t just blow away.

the tool stuff is the least believeable part of his story. Even without tool he could have caught on with a crew and be making good money right now restoring that area. no one that relies on tools for work is running from work

Let me get this straight. You gave a man; who lost everything, down on his luck, broken, smelt like shite, just trying to get home to family, $50, a hotdog and a bottle of water?

You are one cheap piece of shite, wintergreen pouch dippin mofo red neck. Honestly, what you did makes you feel good about yourself? Sheesh...i feel more sorry for than the dude who lost everything.

Thanks Donald J Trump. Horrible fricking job with this event

There it is.

Maybe dude should have paid renter's insurance. Must not have insured his work truck either. Yeah, dude shouldn't have to be responsible for himself, the President should have been there to hand him cash.

excatly...I had 8 buddies that loaded up trailers full of chainsaws and their bucket truck and went down there for 3 weeks cutting down trees off of people's houses and cleaning up the streets. I went down there 2 weeks after the storm on some separate business and there was plenty of tree cutting companies he could have gotten on with....there was plenty of work..there's no reason why, if this guy was a handy man he couldn't find enough work to buy a plane ticket to Atlanta or at least find another way rather than walking to Ft Walton.

This whole story is bullshite.

I could have focused on the holes in their story but instead just gave them the cash I had on hand. Not everyone has family with the means to jump in a vehicle and drive down and help. I gave them my cell number just in case I could help further while their car was being repaired. They never asked for a dime and I got a call a couple days later letting me know they eventually got home safely. I think just knowing a stranger cared meant more to them than the money and gave them some encouragement that they'd get through their ordeal.

This right here. Good job, OP.

In what time frame? I've been over there every week since the storm. A lot of progress, but a whole lot of people still displaced. Many living in tents. Nothing about his story is unbelievable or even especially rare right now. I've helped whole families get from A to B probably 8-10 times.

It really shouldn't be a big "IF" for the lease to be legally recorded. This protects both the owner and the tenant. I do suppose most are too cheap to get something notarized and legally recorded though.

The law states, "as quickly as possible" for the house to be made livable again. Yes, that is vague, and in catastrophes, what does that even mean.

Again, kudos to the OP, but my opinion is that the storm is not the only reason this gentlemen ended up in the predicament that he is in.

Every time i drive past the rotting, decaying Katrina trailer lot at I-12 and (Holden I think?) I wonder if that landowner is still getting paid to “store” all those things. There must be 100+ of them there.

Not when your axle breaks and your whole family gets dysentery and you can’t help them for shite because you spent all your money buying bullets.

greyhound tickets don’t “expire,” they work like plane tickets. He went weeks without realizing he missed his bus?

I am definitely in the bottom tier of Roman Catholics, but one of the lessons that has always stuck with me is:

"Whatsoever you do to the least of my brothers, you do unto me."

I am wary and cynical, but I try to have an open and generous heart for those in need. Even if you got "taken," you did the right thing.

You would have felt even better about this if you didn’t come on here to share.

Stay humble. Your deed was kick arse and I wish more people did stuff like that.
