Good on you for trying to help. It's hard not to assume you're just being scammed these days. Sometimes people don't know how to access charities or they're not responsive enough with immediate assistance.
A few weeks after Michael I encountered 3 young adults from New Orleans along Hwy 98 outside Destin. They had blown a tire, couldn't manage to remove the wheel, were broke, and had slept in their car overnight. They said they drove down to work on hurricane damaged roofs but the contractor ripped them off and they were just giving up and going home. I could have focused on the holes in their story but instead just gave them the cash I had on hand. Not everyone has family with the means to jump in a vehicle and drive down and help. I gave them my cell number just in case I could help further while their car was being repaired. They never asked for a dime and I got a call a couple days later letting me know they eventually got home safely. I think just knowing a stranger cared meant more to them than the money and gave them some encouragement that they'd get through their ordeal.

Sounds like he shoulda just loaded some tools in his work truck and drove away for a few days.
Then his bus ticket is 3 weeks expired?
This guy makes bad decisions.

Where did he get the bus ticket if the bus station was destroyed?

Tons of people make bad decisions. That doesn't mean they don't warrant help. I'm surprised to see how many people left their vehicles behind and lost them. I've also heard too many cases where people had no renters insurance. But if you have the means to help someone recover from their mistakes and believe they're sincere then by all means do so. It was probably worth the $50 so OP could sleep well last night knowing he hadn't left someone in a desperate situation.

Google says 3 days walking if he walks 8 hrs/ day. 4 days if he walks 5 hrs.
1 day if he’s really, really determined to get to that bus station.

Maybe your obvious ignorance is the reason you've been poor in the past.
Or it could be that some of us had to make it on our own with the help from mommy and daddy.

If he had a legal lease the owner cannot run out on him.
Lease stays with the house. Owner is required to rebuild the house to the exact same level before the damage was done.
Methinks you only got a portion of the story, but kudos to you for being a kind heart.

I am grown up, I am being mature about it. That's why I suspect you didn't get the truth from him. There was help available to people after Michael and getting to Atlanta would not be that difficult. I volunteered in shelters after Katrina and saw transportation of victims to other states occurring. They had nothing on them at the time except the clothes they were wearing.
You have no idea WTF you’re talking about

I respect you for trying to help another human that is down on his luck. God will bless you for your efforts - frick anyone in this thread that thinks otherwise.

If the house is uninhabitable and landlord hasn't repaired it he could eventually sue but that doesn't solve his immediate problem.

Which is why we normal folks want a social safety net. The exact thing Republicans want to eliminate. Those of us that have been poor know how quickly things can fall apart.
You are such a fricking idiot.

What happened to his tools, house and truck? Panama City didn’t flood. Just a lot of wind damage.
