New Washer/Dryer...a million buttons and setting I don't use. All I need is temp set and fill level and start.

New microwave...a millions settings options...all i do is hit the number 1 to start it one minute and hit it again if I need to add another minute.

Looked at these new fridges...there is no way anybody ever uses the touchscreens on those things for what COULD be done. Just keep my food cold.

On my iPhone...my god there are countless functions and options I never use. Talk/text/internet/email/scroll I've never used the apple AI and only use Siri to set timers

Smart speakers/home automation...infrequently use alexa to turn TV on or off and volume up or down...but it's terrible to use to change channels or find anything with a million different apps and streaming services etc.

I was going to make a thread on this specifically about cars.

My car is a 2015. It was a nice version of a 2015 car.

It has a reliable, naturally aspirated V6 that gets over 300hp.

It has an infotainment module that I finally rigged to have Android Auto. Comes with the basics like backup cam and settings.

It has an actual shifter for the transmission instead of the dial/switch.

It has tactile buttons all over the dash and real gauges.

What newer tech am I missing since 2015 that would make me want to give up all of that in exchange?

I'm young. I fully understand how to use all the features but just don't have a need to use them in my every day life. Does anyone really use most of those gimmick features???

Feature creep is the name of what you're describing.

It's fine when it's the result of good engineering. It's bad when it's the result of political pandering or marketing.

Unfortunately, most products seem to be marketed to women, and they sure do love a lot of shiny things. (Almost like in nature. It's like there's a connection.)

exactly. It's another example of just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

My sous vide has wifi. Why would I want to adjust a sous vide machine remotely?

I think Adam Carolla mentioned 10 years ago that microwaves really only needed an "add 30 seconds" button and a stop button. Nobody is microwaving anything for 20 minutes unless you're OT poor.

Honestly, my favorite thing about my car is the hands freeness of it. I walk up to my car and it unlocks itself when I touch the handle, I start it, drive it, get out, walk away and the car locks itself when I get 8 ft away... and I never have to touch my key fob in my pocket.

I know most cars have this of course but don't take it for granted.. I think it's one of the best things about newer cars.

We have appliances with wifi.. I don't care anything about that stuff. No idea why a dishwasher needs wifi..

Just a million other things that can break and cost approximately $2,934,875 just to have it repaired.

More stuff to break. Makes dealers a lot of money.

Though, if I were to pick only one feature it would be lane keep assist or lane centering with adaptive cruise control. 12 hour drive with that vs normal cruise is night and day.

I rented a van the other day. In the top right corner there was an icon, about the size of a postage stamp, and I wondered what it was supposed to tell me. The icon mostly stayed green, but occasionally turned red. Eventually, I figured out that it turned red when I got too close to (or crossed over) the centerline.
I have no idea why the car company thought this was a good idea. I mean, I can see where I am in relation to the centerline by looking out the windshield. If I can't tell by looking at the centerline whether I am too close, how is some tiny icon on the dash going to help?

Yeah it's dumb shite that people don't use but adds extra dollars and gives middle managers and below c suite level upper managers projects to accomplish.

I'll happily risk it. Worked out fine so far.

I agree on all you listed but I bought a new PU truck a few months ago and got all the bells an whistles mainly because I wanted a model that has unassisted driving capability. I have arthritis in my neck and that feature helps me out by giving my neck a rest.

of course I had someone tell me I wont use half that stuff. I think it was my negative brother. But anyway I find that I use almost all of it to some degree except the trailering features because I am not pulling one. I spend two hrs a day in my truck commuting so yes I use em.

I was searching for a function on my iPhone yesterday and found a slew of things I didn’t know existed. Eye tracking, back tapping, shaking, etc. I don’t think I’ve ever noticed anyone else use them either. Seems like something that would make me think WTF if I saw a stranger using it in the wild.
