It looks like he succumbed to internal injuries in the initial crash. Pain also explains why he ran.

I know this isn’t any consolation at all… but animals go away to die, as we all know, so it doesn’t necessarily mean he was hurt during the run but that he was running to die away from OP in solidarity.. to spare his feelings.

If that was my dog I would hope he would have died because of the car wreck and not by being hit. It would provide some comfort knowing there was nothing I could do and he wasn’t killed because he got away.

No. I think you’re right about internal injuries from the wreck getting him. He’s not near the road and there are no signs of an impact.
