You could always go mid-sized with places like Omaha and Des Moines.

Anyone else shocked this (almost certain) boomer doesn't realize that millennials and gen z have less liberal arts majors compared to boomers and gen x?

These people love fake news and hate facts.

Yep. Unless your job is tied to a specific area like DC or the oilfield etc, you generally have options.

You’re missing my point. People can live where they want. I guess some people don’t mind Indy or Kansas City but I wouldn’t live in either of those places for any amount of money.

No doubt but you'll probably pay a premium to live in your ideal area. If you are young, it will probably be more painful for you to afford. If that's worth it to you, more power to you

That's certainly fine. But if you desire to live in an expensive area it's by choice.

I wouldn't go that far but it would have to be a job that provided enough income and off time that I could gtfo often. Like several times a month often.

It would be a real dumb move in the long run to pick up your life from an up and coming city where you already have a job and connections to move to BFE to save a couple bucks. That’s not even really a viable option if the person in question really is broke anyways.

How often do you hear these people crying about living in NYC on a $50k salary?

I don't try to keep up with COL there but my oldest daughter is a "millenial"... I've never asked what she makes but I do know her 1250 sq' 2br Tribeca neighborhood condo cost her $4.3 million.

How and why does one end up in NYC then cry about the COL to begin with?

I’m pretty tired of generational bitching. Funny thing is that it only comes from the get off my lawn older man types.

No doubt. If you are a RN living in San Jose it might come at a massive premium over living in Birmingham. If that premium is worth it to you, go for it. Not knocking it, just understand that you are paying for it.

I don’t expect anybody to have sympathy for me. When I got out of the Navy I had the choice to move back to Alabama (or anywhere I could get a job really) but I chose to stay in San Diego. Truth is I’ve gotten used to the great weather, beautiful scenery, beaches, food, and entertainment options. I know I’ll never be able to buy a big home, but I’ve accepted that trade off. It’s just not that important to me. I will agree that it’s annoying to hear millennials complaining about high housing costs when they refuse to look anywhere but the “trendy” neighborhoods. I’ve got a buddy who bought a 3 bed/1.5 bath home in a less than desirable neighborhood. Some of our friends talk shite about the location, but you know what, he owns a home and they don’t. With the way San Diego is gentrifying he’ll have the last laugh before long.

Exactly. The trade off is worth the price for you. You aren't wrong but some young people seem to want an ideal location and a low COL which isn't going to happen unless you just love South Dakota.

Pretty much how I landed in Seattle except I can't afford the COL in my home town, so moving back there was never an option. I separated out of Ft Lewis and stayed. I don't have near the house that a lot of people have but the trade off is worth it to me. It's not worth it for everyone.

They whine about the cost of living in an expensive borough and expect their 50k salary to adjust to them. Anyone else feel this way too?

A $50,000 dollar job in LA, in most cases, is not a $50,000 job in Des Moines. Smaller market, smaller pay. Obviously there are exceptions.
Also, where are you hearing this all of the time? Is it Fox news? I bet it's Fox news...
