My rule of thumb for “midwestern” is the original Big 10 footprint

Just like when Virginia and Kentucky claim to be southern states.

Virginia did secede from the Union and fought with the South.

Robert E Lee was born and raised in Virginia and led the Army of Northern Virginia in the Civil War.

are you trying say Robert E Lee was not “Southern”?

I was referring purely to their actual location in the US.

I lived in North Carolina and considered it a Northern state for sure. Cary is called Central Area of Relocated Yankees. By this definition, I am not sure that South Florida qualifies as Southern.

I don’t care about the mason Dixon line

Spending 5 minutes in either Kentucky or Virginia is enough to know it isn’t the south

There is the South, and everyone else. Call them anything you want it doesn’t matter.

I live in the middle of the middle and before that I grew up & lived a pube hair off that.

quote:

Ohio - Great Lakes
Indiana - MW
Illinois - MW
Michigan - GL
Wisconsin - GL
Minnesota - GL
Iowa - MW
Missouri - MW
North Dakota - Great Plains
South Dakota - Great Plains
Nebraska - 1/3 MW from Kearney to Denver absolutely Great Plains, you can literally still see the wagon ruts on the Oregon Trail from space.
Kansas - Fa@@ots, er, MW
Wyoming - Great Plains
Montana - Great Plains

You will not find a more independent, stubborn, hardier stock of people than those from the Great Plains…just not enough of them.

Great Lakes - Grumpy Old Men

Midwest - Field of Dreams

Great Plains - Dances with Wolves

Midwest was a term when anything past the Mississippi River was the west. Michigan is firmly in the Midwest. Think 1800s

Biggest wow moment for me was when I realized that Maryland is borderline “the south” amongst the locals

The Mason-Dixon Line did demarcate the border of Pennsylvania and Maryland. So if south of the Mason Dixon is southern.... there ya go.

What else would they be?

Northerners. To me Midwest would be a state that is in the middle of the west side of the country. Like say Nevada or Colorado

Based on my handle, I guess I should chime in here. :)

Geez, Midwest is a descriptive, historical name, not some geometric definition of the current 50 states.

Do you know anyone with the last name of Baker or Miller, or Fisher or Cooper?. Do you actually think they should a Baker, Miller, Fisher, or barrel maker?

When Canada becomes the 51st state, we can rename all these to make them current, and Canada can just be the North State. :)

A quote from "The Victors" - the University of Michigan fight song.

Hail! to the conqu'ring heroes
Hail! Hail! to Michigan

Hail! to the victors valiant
Hail! to the conqu'ring heroes
Hail! Hail! to Michigan,
the champions of the West!

Guess what "West" they're talking about.

Herein lies the problem. There is a correct definition for the word "midwest". The old northwest territory (all the land North of the Ohio River and East of Colorado)

From Detroit, it is about 600 miles to the Atlantic and 2100 to the pacific.

When folks “went west” from the original U.S. states, that’s where they went. The real west was Indian country and lands owned by France.
