I was working out of town recently and had a douchebag older guy talking down to my buddy who was wearing a high visibility shirt at the bar. Kept asking him if he worked janitorial or trash services. My buddy probably makes 125k a year and never let the old guy know it. So yea I hear ya.

I usually lead with, “Tell me about your deepest insecurities.” 60% of the time, it works every time.

Sounds like your BUDDY missed an opportunity to tell the old frick he'd take his arse to the curb for free.

I’m definitely the kind of person that would ask you what you did for a living if we were small talking. I have zero interest in talking about what I do for a living but I like to learn about other people. Some people are genuinely inquisitive.

I couldn't care any less about what you do for a living. I am just here to give you your very well deserved downvote.

If it’s another guy, nothing. If we are stuck in an awkward situation just standing there, no need to chit chat. Just sip your drink and enjoy the silence, the women will end it soon enough.

It’s mostly an American phenomenon, Americans spend a lot of time working vs most countries and we are a consumer culture so it’s one of the first questions asked.

Woman asked me this at a bar Saturday and drunk me said, “Not much, but I have been dabbling in human trafficking lately”.

Sounds like you’re a very poor conversationalist or ashamed of what you do for a living. It’s a very basic question on first meeting - work, family, hobbies, where you’re from, etc. just to get to know a person and find some common ground. Nothing wrong with taking an interest in other people you meet

America has a very opaque class system. It can be hard to tell where other people fall in it.

That’s why people ask you what you do.

They want to know how you rank, compared to them.
