That is a very inspirational post and congrats on your success.

To get down to 145 at your age and starting at 220 is quite a feat, and even more so in such a short time.

I had a nephew who wanted to join the Air Force but was told by the recruiter he was too fat to be considered and he lost 75 lbs. over a 6 month period and I thought that was amazing, and he was only 19 at the time. Oh, and he did get in the Air Force and spent 8 years in service.

Nothing for breakfast, cereal and fruit. My lunch sandwich is 2 slices wheat bread toasted, sliced baked Turkey or chicken with a little Mayo, lettuce and tomato and fresh fruit. Whatever I have for supper, 1 slice of wheat bread toasted with it. That's it.

I say the first step, and easiest step, is to stay away from fast food restaurants.

This will immediately help with blood test numbers, which is very important, but doesn't necessarily lead to weight loss.

When I had a kid and started shopping for life insurance, my numbers were bad. I ditched fast food and after only a month my numbers improved dramatically, cut my rate quotes in half. It's amazing how bad that stuff it for you.

But my weight didn't change. That took even more work.

Can you or anyone else add some specificity to this? Like what foods and how are they prepared?

a few staples for us include grilled chicken (marinated in low sodium soy sauce and some garlic), half a sweet potato and steamed broccoli
- grilled salmon (marinated in low sodium soy sauce, about a teaspoon of light brown sugar) sugar snap peas, carrots, and brown rice
- 6oz sirloin with a little salt and pepper, green beans, sweet potato
- street tacos with grilled shrimp, slaw, and avocado
-vegetable soup
-Zuppa Toscana (google it) but we sub the potatoes for cauliflower and the heavy cream with unsweetened coconut cream and the Italian sausage with Italian turkey - this is incredible.
if you have coscto membership, they have a kirkland brand brown rice and quinoa that comes in a microwavable bag. its really healthy and takes 2 minutes. we add it to a to of stuff.

Your cereal intake is whole grain, wheat based?

I am very curious because your past situation sounds exactly like mine.

Key is to keep track of calories. And don't waste your calorie budget.
I realize most aren't going to do this but once I switched to whole unprocessed foods I found it wasn't necessary to count calories. But I'm talking true unprocessed food with no added oils or sugars (not to say I never cheat on the oil or sugar but 95% of the time). I lost 115 lbs in a year with this method and didn't count a single calorie, carb, or macro. I didn't even work out until most of the weight was gone. My blood sugar normalized. My hypertension went away. Hell, I had to quit metformin and lisinopril 30 days in.

I don't expect anyone to be interested (understandably) but just wanted to let people know that it's possible to reach and maintain a healthy weight without counting calories. People did it for thousands of years, even in areas where food was abundant.

this probably helps a lot. I can shed 10-15 lbs without changing a single thing except to stop drinking for a few weeks. But I fricking love whiskey.

This is my problem I drink a couple liters of bourbon every weekend.

Mostly Raisin Bran. Oatmeal and yogurt mix is my go to breakfast. There's many different recipes on the net for oatmeal/yogurt breakfast.

Great stuff all throughout this thread. Congratulations to everyone who is making healthier choices.

I have seen a handful of my friends go through similar transformations during the past year and I am so happy that they are getting healthy.

Well done. I'm down from 300 to 260 and have been at 260 for about three months.

Now its time for phase a two. Gotta get to 225 to ride horses in late May. Keep on inspiring.

Gotta get those Omega 3's in your diet

Agree.

Government guidelines to reduce (good) fats in our diets have resulted in skyrocketing vegetable oil consumption since 1980.

There is evidence that excessive amounts of Omega-6 (vegetable oil) in fast food affects our cell walls, causing inflammation and changes in metabolism.

As I understand it, adding a good balance of Omega-3 fatty acids can help to overcome this inflammation, and its effects.

True. A good wild caught salmon should be a staple in everyone's diet.
