So yesterday, as we all know, there was a tragedy in Jacksonville. Within seconds, my social media lit up with the typical calls to ban guns, needing stricter gun control, NRA is evil, etc.

Out of curiosity, I googled "Shootings in Chicago this weekend."

There were 28 shootings this weekend, and two fatalities. 28 SHOOTINGS. That's insane.

And yet, ignored completely. People want to change policy over 3 fatalities (one the gunman), but don't say a word when it comes to 28 shot over the span of three days. And this happens every weekend.

I don’t advocate for gun control or anything, but I don’t fear for my life when a bunch of gangbangers shoot each other in the ghetto parts of town. There’s quite a bit of difference between that and a guy playing a video game and getting so mad after a loss that he kills people.

If anything, shootings in Chicago should be showing the rest of the country how gun control doesn’t work.

I'm in Chicago most weeks. There is outrage locally for the issue, and the current mayor is not well liked.

Yeah we met a couple from Chicago on our honeymoon a couple years ago. He was fed up with the leadership and shootings then, but still said he felt safe.

This was my first thought when I read OP.

It isn't that interesting. It's all about being relatable. The vast majority of people cannot or do not relate the type of violence that occurs in Chicago to their own lives.

Violence against children at school, or at an office, or at some gaming event?

Now that's relatable. And useful.

I have a place in one of the newer glass sky scrapers in West Loop. I don't feel unsafe at all in that area around Whole Foods or up and down Randolph.

It's actually pretty incredible considering how close it is to a complete war zone and the general lack of police presence I see around. Some parts of the Loop quiet down at night and seems to attract a lot of homeless since the weather warmed up. But I never felt unsafe there, even when walking up and down Adams late at night.

But I am aware of my surroundings and I know that the long term Chicago residents are extremely frustrated with the ongoing violence on the south side. It's truly a beautiful city with incredible food, nightlife, and job opportunities.

It's crime problems are brought up all the time for good reason. It's a huge blemish on a city that I think most OT'ers would appreciate and enjoy more than Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Washington DC, etc.

There’s your answer. It happens so much that it isn’t newsworthy anymore.

Same goes for shootings in Baton Rouge and New Orleans. When it is black on black, no one bats an eye. But when it is white on black or officer involved, burn the city down.

Same goes for “mass shootings”. I saw an interview on twitter after it happened where someone was talking about how people with mental issues shouldn’t be buying guns and they need rules to buy guns. Those are already in play. But believe it or not, people can hide mental issues. And I’m willing to bet that that gun was legally purchased.

Or maybe when it's one dude murdering another, no one bats an eye, but one dude goes to a public gathering and starts unloading...well honestly if you can't understand the difference in the first place it's pretty pointless to point it out.

I disagree. In New Orleans 2 weeks ago 10 people got shot with 3 dying because some gang members were after one person but shot all the rest too. Outside of Nola and Louisiana, it barely made it to national news.

Yea, I have only felt unsafe a couple of times living here, and that was alwyas late at night near the red line when I thought I was going to get robbed.

A much larger chunk of the city is safe now than fifteen or twenty years ago. You couldn't live where you do and I especially couldn't live where I do back then.

Because people of all races simply don't care.

The thread on the shooting yesterday is 28 pages. Chicago shootings are doing well to get 3 pages.

I said it yesterday in the thread and others have echoed that sentiment here - there is nothing relatable about gang related violence in the ghetto.

Because it doesn't fit Rahm Emmanuel's agenda to publicize the shootings in his town. It's all about political agenda...it's not about life anymore.

Pure example of how the national media controls the narrative.

Though I dont agree on exactly the way Trump, calls them out, a bit petty, but it is needed. Unfortunately, his way of doing it may be the only way to get thru. Which is sad.
