I don't understand how people can live in a house full of roaches

Did some work this morning at my aunt's house, decent neighborhood but old houses. I'm retired in fire/ems and her neighbor down the road had asked about me putting in a couple smoke detectors also. So this is about 30 minutes ago. From the outside nothing looked trashy, I go in and immediately noted the smell, in my ems days we'd go into roach infested houses and you can smell it right off the bat.
I don't have a phobia of them like some do but damn. I pull her old detector off and there had to have been 100s of little roaches running around inside, hallway was dark so couldn't see if any were on the outside before pulling it off, it was an odd experience. Both detectors were like this. I asked her to turn the lights on and that was a mistake, roaches all over the damn place. No way I could live like that. We get the occasional waterbug in our house during the summer, Maybe the occasional regular roach but rare. I may have developed a phobia today, horrible. Had to go back to aunt's house and get in front of mirror to make sure none were on me, didn't see any but who knows. Now I got to throw all my clothes off before I walk in my house. I'm spraying that shite down with bug spray and then washing it after a day or 2.

If it is your aunt's next door neighbor, make sure she stays on top of her pest control. I'd even consider regular spraying the lawn between the houses. If they ever start to address that infestation at that house and those frickers will scatter, you don't want your aunt to be the next shelter

The big flyers typically don't mean an infestation though. They may come in during drought by themselves looking for water. The small ones mean you are infested. You can kill a waterbug and be good to go.

I don't' go that far, but they definitely creep me out. I will find anything to smash them, glove up, use a bleach wipe to pick them up, then bleach the area, and still need to scrub my hands down with dawn soap after removing the glove.

Neighbor is a couple houses down but across the street. Aunt keeps her house immaculate. I was actually there just to replace the starter on her car, not actually working on her house like I worded it in OP. I mentioned to her about the roaches and she laughed and told me "yea, I don't let her inside my house, we talk outside only"

I grew up in a small town, and we would have been considedered poor by most people's standards, but my mom kept our house clean.
Our next door neighbors were lazy, govt dependent people, but one of the sons was my age and we were friends. He invited me to have dinner at his house one night, and I went over. Went in and sat down on some ratty looking couch, and noticed roaches and bugs crawling around on the floor and walls. It was the last time I set foot in that house.

When I was online I worked with a guy like.this on the ambulance. Incredible paramedic and a great dude. The first sign of a roach and he’d nope it out of the house. Saw him have a legit panic attack once over them. Also we were rolling a patient over inside a house and several roaches came scurrying out and he yellled “what the frick is wrong with you” to the patient and ran out

I get an occasional roach in the house but no infestation.. But I did have a lot on my patio, which is right off my house.. My neighbor gave me some poison that he had left from his annual spraying.. I haven't seen one since.. I don't know what it is all he could tell me is where he bought it from...

I went and helped clear out some houses after Harvey hit Houston and a couple of them there were thousands of roaches behind the sheet rock every time we opened up a wall. Half the crew had to leave and couldn't do it. I just can't fathom these people loving like this.

Water bugs aka Louisiana cockroaches.
I have trauma because my mom didn't like to kill them growing up they would be chilling on my wooden bed frame at night, I would put my shoes on in the morning and squash them because they were in the toe and waking up in the middle of the night with excruciating thirst was the thing of nightmares. I would have to flip the light on in the kitchen and watch those skateboards fly across the floor, run up the walls, fly clumsily right at me and my favorite was opening the cabinet to get a glass and they're all in there

Never before and never since have I seen a large roach "infestation". As you said we get a few a year during the summer than wander in looking for water. ... but I went to a girl's house for a small gathering in college and opened her dishwasher to get a glass and about a dozen of them came crawling out. I dropped the glass ran out and told her there is problem. She acted like it was no big deal. The house was in the country and actually a nice place....so we planned on staying the night . We settled down to watch a movie kept on seeing shite out the corner of my eye . Finally I got up turned on the light and they were all over the living room ...the walls, the carpet...like Joe's Apartment .......we got the frick out of there. I cant believe anyone could live like that..if I see one of those things Ill tear the room apart until I find and kill it.

This has always fascinated me too. There are hoarders who basically have a diagnosis and then there are people who are totally immune to squalor.
I've seen a few of these over the years and my wife spent sometime as an in home therapist and saw it a ton. Food left out everywhere to rot, roaches crawling on ever surface..one woman barefoot stomped a roach mid sentence like it was nothing....piles of repulsively unclean clothes that function as the families wardrobe, burnt out lights, beeping smoke alarms.... it's amazing to me what people allow themselves to live in like it's normal

My wife watches those "hoarder" shows on MAX. There are multiple seasons of them. Some people are more than willing to live in filthy conditions. I don't get it.

Roaches are nightmare material for me. One time one of my kids pranked me with a fake one and I stayed in my room for hours waiting for it to leave.
