It is a sacrifice, but people make it work somehow. A friend and wife have 4 kids, both of them have civil service jobs. They have a 3 BR house, not many frills, but they are the happiest family you'll ever meet.

When I had both of mine in Catholic school in the '90's, when the graduated and went to LSU that was a big raise for me.

I paid for three daughters’ braces (my son never needed them), totally out of pocket. Seems like I had one in braces for 8 years straight. Orthodontist was a church friend. I think I paid for at least half of his last boat.

Of course that’s on top of band fees and unis, instruments, track team fees, cheerleading fees, cars and insurance, church camp every summer, new clothes, and just fvkn feeding them, etc. My wife was a SAHM for 15 years so we didn’t have daycare cost, thank God. I made good money but I still don’t know how we did it.

And my super awesome insurance is ‘only’ $1300/month. I never seriously considered being uninsured until a few months ago, but knowing a broken arm or appendectomy would cost tens of thousands of dollars in self pay, I bit the bullet and got the shitty insurance.

Yeah once my wife and I have a kid ours will be about that. To save now I'm on a high deductible plan with an HSA through my employer and she's on a PPO through hers since women get sick every other week. Our health insurance costs will go up around $500/month if I remember right.

I’m about to fork out 60k for pre-k this coming year. Pretty much the only way for him to guarantee acceptance into the Kinder class at the top notch catholic school we’re wanting him to attend.

And then you pay taxes to feed Shaniquas 10 kids and Shaniqua never worries for a second.

I have a friend who has seven kids. The oldest just started college, the youngest isn't out of diapers yet.

It takes a literal village because they had a damn village! Straight stair-steppers, no twins in the bunch!

We spend $36k a year on daycare for two kids, and our third will be in there in 6ish months too. Luckily, my 5yo got into a really nice charter school near our neighborhood so we can cut that down for a few months.

Summer is filled with camps and sports lessons to keep her busy, so that’s another couple grand.

We’re extremely fortunate that both of us make good money and can afford it, because three kids was always our dream - it’d be a shame if money held us back from that like a it does for a lot of folks.
