A guy at work has a daughter that’s really, really good at softball. She will get a scholarship to some school, but at what cost?
For nearly 10 years now, he has dropped $1000’s of dollars a year, on training, traveling, etc. All his vacation is used for away tournaments. They do nothing but travel for games. They don’t take vacations, and probably over half his weekends are taken up from softball.
I know some people say that’s what they enjoy, but he complains ever second about it. He acts miserable about the entire thing.
He has spent enough money to pay for two college tuitions in hopes to get one, and missing out on living a family life together other than hotels and ball parks.

so the example you use is a kid being successful and getting a scholarship to a school.

Try harder, start over.

Why the heck are you worried about the type of vacations they take or don't take?

Do you talk about sense of accomplishments, vacations of going to tournaments. The friendships made over the years with families?

A guy I work with has spent 8-10K a year on travel ball since his daughter was 9 years old. She's maximized her ability and as a senior she's a pretty good HS player, but that's all. She may be able to walk on at a smaller school, but she's not getting a scholly. He could have saved up all that money and be able to pay her full tuition anywhere she wants to go.

A kid being successful at the sacrifice of a family. They are spending more than the return will bring.

We do/did it from U10-U13, but we’re done after this year. He can play school sports from now.

It really has been a great confidence booster for my son. Best thing is that nobody knows what he does. He can be the star of the #1 U13 team in MS on the weekend, then he goes to school like everyone else and doesn’t say a word about it. He’s ready to play other sports, but the level of success he’s achieved at this one will help him I believe.

I don't get it either but to each his own.

Spending time together as a family is a good thing and I don't see it as my place to tell someone else how to spend their time or money.

I don’t get it at all. I can think of nothing less fun than wasting all weekend going to some dipshit town to watch a meaningless game with a bunch of dolts who think their kid is special.

Travel ball is white peoples AAU. Which means it’s a total racket benefiting a few with masses of suckers

I thought you couldn’t be within 500 ft of a school, playground, or a Chuck E Cheese

Should have a travel ball forum instead of a garden forum
