I remember when 100k miles on a vehicle was kind of a big deal…. Not that long ago.

To be fair, I was more focusing on the 80s.

Automobiles took a big leap in the early-mid 90s. That's when automobiles stopped sucking, as they had for a decade+

I tried to make this point last night before the ad hom fest.

Now 200k is seen as the expectations. 100k is the bare minimum.

No...just no.
Yeah I remember all the times back in the 90s that the battery ground cable sensor went out or my exhaust fluid system failed. It sounds like made up parts like blinker fluid...but nope...it exists.

Newer vehicles have far less long term reliability beyond 100k miles when all the sensors/electronics start to degrade.

Let me guess it’s a ford and that’s not its first time in the shop.

You mean 40 years ago? Every vehicle I've had has gone well over 200k miles and I'm 45 years old.

I don't recall ever thinking that 100k miles was a big deal.

That's basically a base Maverick, right?

Not at almost $30,000 base price it isn't. I paid $11,000 out the door for a brand new S-10.

I still see late 80s and early 90s model s10s on the road all the time. Of course it helps that my state doesn't have inspections. Half the vehicles on the road in arkansas wouldn't pass inspection. All of my newer models have evap codes for stupid crap like charcoal canisters and purge valves.

I'm wondering why someone would spend this kind of money on a 13 year old car? The labor, replacement motor, AC parts and service, serp belt, water pump and hoses and God knows what all else to get it running again. I would have walked away from this thing in a heartbeat and taken that money and spent it on something else.

Keep reading the thread and you'll see people making that same decision for older vehicles

They come with 10/100k warranties regularly.

My GMC didn't come with that warranty. They get better gas mileage but no.,Trucks today don't last 300k like the 350 did.

You average 10 post per day since you signed up on TD but you want people to believe you are some hard working overpaid professional

Base-trim vehicles are not lavish even these days. Sure, they are probably what we would have called middle to upper a decade ago, but they are still pretty basic. They have cruise control, power windows, usually Bluetooth radio, but otherwise are still pretty spartan and significantly cheaper than upper trims. A work truck trim F250 is certainly not fancy by today's measure. I believe you can still get them without cruise control.

Now what is absolutely forced on you is the safety standards, emissions standards, offsetting costs of less profitable products, etc.

Ignoring some of the outliers like the shitty cadillac example from the OP, modern vehicles are in many ways easier to work on than old ones were and many many times more reliable.

That doesn't change the fact that Mingo is big league jealous that lots of mechanics out there are clearing a quarter mil a year these days. They are in ABSURD demand right now and we are rapidly approaching a time where the average hands-on workers will be routinely out-earning the upper quartile of college educated white collar worker.
