I am on the fence about whether #teampanic or #teamoverreaction is right

On the one hand, you hear from lots of doctors that this is going to be a massive tragedy in just two weeks, while on the other hand the ability of drugs like chloroquine to treat patients, the amount of economic devastation and lives that will be lost from continued shutdowns, etc. would suggest that the level of economic shutdown we're seeing is entirely not justified.
The problem is that even if this is actually a huge overreaction, #teampanic will never admit it and just say that it "proved" that social distancing and flattening the curve worked.
It will be fascinating to see how it all turns out, it's refreshing to have an issue (personally) that I don't have a "side" on like Republicans vs. Democrats. Right now I'd say I agree more with #teamoverreaction, but it's like 60/40 not 100/0. In any event, it will probably be a year or longer until the data settles enough for a conclusive determination on which side was "right".

It’s an intentional overreaction as it’s the safe bet. If you overreact, blah blah blah. If you don’t, hospitals get nailed and people die.

I hear you. But, except for those that are sick and the health care workers battling this virus the veracity of the claims/statistics made by either crowd hardly matter compared to the very real decimation of our economy. There is not going to be a V. Things won't just bounce back to the normal. The genie is out of the bottle and this is going to wreck many lives from a financial standpoint.

As usually the answers is somewhere in the middle. Yes you should be taking the recommended precautions. But this isn’t the end of the world.

My hospital system has seen over a thousand people with symptoms in the past week. There have been 3 positive tests and 1 overnight hospitalization for observation. That person went home the next day.

over age ~55 seems to be the panic age and that demographic has a legitimate concern if the numbers being reported are accurate

I don’t disagree with your second paragraph at all but the poster didn’t mean financially and it’s clearly evident if you read his post.
He insinuated hospitals “will be nailed” by all these patients needing hospitalization due to corona virus (they won’t) and people will die because of it (again they won’t)
