What's more impressive is the middle railroad bridge was opened in 1892

It’s interesting how the crack did not occur right at that riveted junction. That probably means something to civil engineers, of which I am definitely not.

As of this afternoon, they have shutdown all river traffic under the bridge. They must seriously expect it to fall soon

It's probably a precaution to prevent any additional damage to the bridge if a barge were to hit the bridge supports

How often do they inspect the bridge? They may not want to say, but if that occurred in the past week, past month, etc. all of a sudden

Also, is that building material the kind that reacts with elastic stretch before the break? Surely someone might have heard the break, maybe.

Maybe a person didn't hear the break, but with all the earthquake monitoring there, there might just be a different signature on one of the seismograph monitors. Better yet on several so they could triangulate and say, "The bridge, the bridge"

I’ve read every year, I’ve also read every two years. Regardless, I’m curious if the crack was noted in prior inspections or occurred suddenly.

It depends on multiple conditions. Basically, every two years is standard but it could be a year or six months. Earlier I mentioned FCMs, which could change the requirement to one year even if the bridge is in mint condition otherwise.

The video in the OP mentions it was a contractor. They are usually hired for more thorough inspections (things like mag particle inspection on pins) that are required at longer intervals. Though the contractor could be doing a 'routine' inspection as some states aren't equipped to properly inspect a structure like this.

I’m sorry maybe I’m being harsh but how can someone not know this? It’s carbon steel, what else would it have been?

It should have been something that was heard imo as it looks like a clean shear from fatigue but obviously that didn’t happen or no one reported it as we would know by now.

Apparently only every two years which is a bit unnerving. Last inspected in 2019.

I keep seeing conflicting info on this. I saw that somewhere and then TDOT said 2019. Idk

ArDOT says it was September 2020. Both share responsibility and costs on the bridge.

The interstate bridges are inspected on a regular schedule every two years. During its previous inspection two years ago, Degges said the I-40 bridge was determined to be in “fair” condition.

That’s from the article you posted and part of what I was telling capstone about conflicting info. If I had to guess they probably have rigorous inspections every 2 years and have some other lower level visual inspections in between.

Also I bet they didn’t even get near completing their actual inspection when they spotted this obvious failure. I wonder what they’ll find when they continue on with mag particle inspections of the rest of the bridge.

That bridge is the most heavily trafficked freight bridge in the country.

Not even in the top 10

I think I was confusing it with 55 bridge in Memphis but also it was a while ago when I read that and have no idea what it is now

Just off the top of my head, the Tappan Zee over the Hudson River (I -287) and the I-95 bridge over the Delaware River have at least double the freight traffic over this one.

Y’all think Semi Traffic is bad on I-40, spend a day between Newark - Baltimore. It’s nuts

The beam area just to the left of the riveted section looks pretty bad as well.

Wonder if they will be able to add some riveted mending plates over the crack.
