A friend's sister has a 2:45 flight and has been at a standstill for almost 2 hours. Don't think she's gonna make it

buddy posted this on FB earlier:

Stay off I-10 towards Nola. Just witnessed the most amazing wreck between two 18 wheelers and a few cars. Traffic will be shut down for hours on the bridge by LaPlace, no off ramp to divert.
was passing but looked REALLY bad. Pieces covering both lanes on the bridge. 18 wheeler turned an SUV into a mini

I'm all for enacting a law "criminalizing" at fault drivers, IF they negligently cause back-ups/delays, of this nature !
Something like a VERY LARGE fine or "banning" them from interstates for 6 months to a year !

Tell her to call whatever airline it is right now so they don't completely cancel her ticket. Then when she finally does make it to the airport the agents can rebook her

Hope everyone's ok. That sounds bad.

I just came through westbound and they are starting to clear it out, but it looks like a mess with several fire/rescue/police still on site and no cars going through yet. It's also an area with cable fence in the median, so turning around isn't easy. People are driving west through the median to find openings to get to the westbound lanes.

If you used Waze you would never be stuck in an interstate shutdown.
I've been about to enter the on-ramp for the GNO and had Waze update, tell me to turn around and go all the way to Huey P Long. It's great how well it works and the more people using it, the better the updating.

I don't know about never. but it does greatly diminish the chance

If they would enforce left lane rules we would have a lot less accidents on our interstates...

The only time I've been stuck in one running waze was when I was one of the first cars stopped.

It's stunning how quickly it reacts, too. One morning I was heading Eastbound on I-10 out of BR. About 200 yards before the Highland exit, Waze insisted that I get off the interstate. I looked ahead and nothing was out of the ordinary, but I listened to Waze. When I got to the bottom of the off-ramp, I looked up to the other side of the overpass over Highland and there was a wreck and maybe a line of, at most, 15-20 cars in each lane. The wreck had just happened and the backup hadn't really built yet, but someone had reported it to Waze and it was already actively directing people off of I-10.
When Waze tells you to get off the fricking interstate, you get off the fricking interstate.

the only time you will be is when you are at the start of it. I saw a huge wreck right after it happened two weeks ago that pretty much shut down the spillway bridge. I tagged it on waze and dialed *lsp.

Yeah, if the wreck is between you and the next exit, you're just boned, but there's nothing Waze could have done for you anyway. You were preboned and just didn't know it.
